Re: Recall: Jeep Wrangler JL frame weld failures

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking there shouldn't be any "slag" involved. That implies that welding rod was used. Pretty sure these are welded up with some type of automated MIG type welder.

If it looks like slag, it probably is impurities and/or too much heat. The holes can also indicate the same impurities and excess amperage).

Re: Recall: Jeep Wrangler JL frame weld failures

This is a paste from the JL forum:

JK frames were not galvanized. Galvanized steel is hard to weld because the zinc in the galvanized coating vaporizes below steel melting temperatures. If travel speed is too fast, the weld puddle will start to cool before all of the zinc is vaporized. This causes porosity. You can get a sense of the travel speed from the shape of the weld bead and it was definitely too fast (from welds I have seen), probably to reduce cost. New metal core MIG wires that contain arc stabilizers can help solve some of the issues of welding galvanized steel. Here's an article from Miller about it.

Bad metal prep and/or shielding gas issues can cause mig weld slag. Stick and flux core is supposed to produce slag, it’s the by product of adding flux to the weld.

The recall is only for the trac bar BRACKET not being welded to the bracket. There are documented cases of the weld totally missing the bracket, as if the robot didn't calibrate to the parts.

There is actually a very small amount of vehicles that fit the recall.

The porosity issues, etc, are not part of the recall.

Yup. My welding holes apparently meet the standards FCA has.

This has the potential of being as bad as the great Jeep XJ frame recall of 1983.

Wow, can you imagine what will happen in the states that salt the roads during the winter? Frames will start rotting out around those holes.

Well, we've all seen what happens to Jeeps from back east anywhoo...........

Here's what Jalopnik published on Fiat Chrysler's proposed "Jeep fix"

    https://jalopnik.com/heres-how-jeep-..._D-1H-sNiD7HQQ

It was awful nice of them to share the frame build dates for the affected JL's
If I ever go to buy one, that's the first thing I'll look at.

If that’s their “fix” I’d just lop off the factory bracket and weld in a Artec panhard bracket. It’s 1 piece 1/4” cold rolled and it welds up the side of the frame, not just at the bottom like FCA. Gives it way more torsional strength than stock.

    IF the frame is galvanized?

Edit: I reread my link above and yes the welded sections are prone to rust if not done properly. Even the weld itself can rust once the silica flakes off.

Re: Recall: Jeep Wrangler JL frame weld failures

Jeep announced the JL Track Bar Weld basic info today, Customer notifications begin next week. Recall # is UA5 and is very limited to certain frame build dates. I am not sure if all the JL's have the recall just for an inspection, then if it falls in the frame build date that needs attention, repairs go from there. Either way if you are a JL owner you should be able to go to NHTSA recall site and type in your vin there so see if yours needs an inspection for the recall. Or you can send me the last 8 digits of your vin # and I can check for you. Very early notifications right now, will find out more info as we go and see what is needed and done for the repair if required.
