Shaved 14b vs 35 spline 44. Ground clearance with 37's

OK so I got a pretty bent housing. Looking at getting a 5 on 5/2 hubbed shaved 14b instead of sinking money in the 44 and selling off the parts. Anyone have real world ground clearance stories or facts ie inches of ground clearance with a shaved 14b clearance with 37's? In the middle of a stretch when we found this out.

I have no help for you but I am curious on how one bends the housing? Was it normal rock crawling or jamming on a forest road or similar?

I am not sure with 37's but a shaved 14 is not much more hang down than a D44. I am at 14" (coincidentally) with 39's aired down to 8psi
A little bit of something is a whole lot better than nothing.

    Simple math...

    14 bolt = 13" (6.5" below axle center line)
    https://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/14COV.html (click image of cover)

    Dana 44 = 10.56" (5.28" below axle center line)
    https://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com...og/D44COV.html (click image of cover)

    14 Bolt Shave = 1 3/4"
    http://image.fourwheeler.com/f/48757...om-measurement

    6.5 - 1.75 = 4.75" The shaved 14 Bolt thus has about 1/2" more clearance than a Dana 44.

sorry but your links have no measurements. Also to have "around the same" ground clearance as a dana 44 you have to have a machine shop cut down the ring gear from 10.5” to 10.050” for clearance. http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/su...-differential/ Now im not saying that the 14 bolt is not a good option, they are and after the shave they are killer. but they need money and time to fit your application. The OP http://www.virtualjeepclub.com/showt...r-axle-housing and so he has a "BUILT" dana44 but has a bent housing. so instead of starting all over on building an axle he could just fix the housing he has cuz he has all the parts for that axle. there is no denying the strength of a 14 bolt over a dana 44 hands down a winner, but if your only running 37's and don't plan to go any bigger. he could take apart the 44 and have the housing made straight and gusset it so it won't happen again. there is also the ford 8.8 or ford 9 that are stronger than the 44 and both of those can be "shaved" also. but you still have a front 44 that limits your tire size also. figure out if your going to a bigger tire size down the road if so, go with a bigger rear axle now and swap the front axle out later to a bigger one also. i was just giving him options as he already has a "BUILT" 44 it just has a bent housing. The old figure out the money and time ratio for each option and pull the trigger LOL.

    Maybe this will help.
I run a 14 bolt shaved 1" (no need to cut ring gear, no welding or machining of housing) and it has 13" ground clearance with 40" Trepadors (actual tire height is about 38") aired at 32 psi (street pressures). The front is a Dana 44 and it has 13.5".

I used to have a CJ-5 with a Dana 44 in the rear and Dana 30 front, and broke both with about 100 hp.
I've had the Dana 44 in the front of my YJ and the 14 bolt rear since 2011 and no problems with a 290 hp chevy crate motor.
Obviously the rear position puts more strain on the differential.
For many years, stock chevy 4x4 trucks ran 14 bolt rear and D44 front. I've been happy with the combo.

Yep about .5" difference. Well I straightened the 44 housing so going that route for now then sell the front and rear as a set when I redo it all again in the future.......
