    Home A/C recommendation needed.

Its time to get the pressure checked on my system and I don't have the tools. Its still running fine but I had to have freon added a couple years ago, so I'm concerned about a leak. Anyone know of a trustworthy technician? I can deal with sales pitches, but mostly concerned with sabotage. I intend to use this compressor until it breaks. Any recommendations are appreciated.

He may not get to the east side very often, but I can tell you from experience that it is worth waiting for him.

Yah, I already talked with Redneck 20 and its just not worth the drive for him to just do a checkout. I don't blame him.

Adam, I didn't know bobby did AC. He's a mile away. Can you PM me his number? Thanks.

Tortured, I'll keep Kevin's info in case Bobby isn't available. Thanks for the recommendation.

Simple Yeezy check you can do is with a infrared scanner available at Home Depot. Compare the inlet temperature 2 vent temperature

    Re: Home A/C recommendation needed.

Depending on the location of the ducts and air handling equipment, the temperature at the grill and vents may vary a great deal.
I have seen duct with R-6 insulation in a vented attic gain 2-3 degrees every 10 feet of run, especially if it runs near the peak of the roof. In this situation, I check the temp drop at the unit.

If the ducts and air handling unit are in the crawl or a basement then the heat gain on the ducts are almost 0, and you can read at the grill and vent.

Also, if there is a high and low return, it is best to check at the indoor unit to get an average temp on the return side.

Another factor, as quoted above, is humidity. If there is a high amount of humidity in the home, usually from the unit being turned off or opened doors or windows, the temperature drop will be lower due to the refrigerents energy being used up to remove the humidity. The unit needs to run for 24 hours with the house closed up, except for normal traffic, and then tested.

I always expect a minimum of 15 degrees difference, but prefer 17 to 20.

More common than pressure is how clean your coils. Even if you change filters religiously, crap / hair / dust builds up on coils (especially if have pets), which can dramatically effect efficiency / effectiveness. While one can DIY, doing properly is best left to professionals.
