NEW NEW NEW 17 year old Wj

    Hello all.

I'm Cory by the time anyone read's this it will probably be 2018 Happy new Year! Alright so I got a 18 y/o WJ from a local auction with a salvage title. Frame is bent just behind the tires (not a lot), gas tank got pushed into the rear sway bar. I was able to get it to pass inspection, emission tested and licensed in 6 days, granted it only has 130,000 miles on it. Rear axle seals are shot so those are next then on to the frame. Even with a bent frame it drives better then my other SUV. Why did I not buy a jeep years ago? Wanted one ever since 1993. I have been working my way through the local trails that my stock WJ can make it. The bridge at the end of Bloody basin rd was fun along with Castle hotspring rd and Belmont mine trail. Short term-Cant wait for lockers, sliders and a lift kit. Long term V8 upgrade and new seats. looking forward to trail runs.

Welcome, lots of after market mods for the WJ's now. 5 years ago when I bought mine there wasn't much at all.

I mean, at least they aren't completely rectangular! That's what I keep telling myself.

Sounds like you bought my old WJ! Lol but too many miles on it. I had a 99 that I bought in '14 with 51k miles on it. It got rear ended and totaled. I bought it back and sold it to my neighbor who ended up trading it in on a JKU.

I did an Eaton e-locker in the d30 and an Aussie in the rear d44a. If you have the varilock axels there are not a lot of options with out changing the carrier.

The build sheet indicates a OPEN 3.73 but it sure feels like it has a varilock LSD in the rear. I haven't looked up the front yet. If the build sheet is correct, I was thinking of the spartan locker. What do you know about the spartan?
Wounder if I could see if there are any clutch packs from the fill hole

When I bought the Aussie it had the best over all reviews out of all the lunch box lockers. It was on special when I bought it so that helped me decide. They all work about the same, some will wear the pin out faster than others but I'm no expert. Just be prepared for some clicking when turning especially on pavement.

You won't see clutch packs but the carriers are visibly different - open left, varilok right.

You can test to see if it's working very quickly - just lift the axle up and spin one wheel. It should start locking up quickly.

If you do have a varilok and want to swap it for an aftermarket locker, you'll need an open carrier and new axle shafts.
