    YJ help needed.

    1993 YJ 4.0 auto, SOA, D30 with a lunchbox, D35 with a Detroit, 33" tires 10x15 rims.

I have a steering issue that is kicking my ***. Doesn't matter if I'm in 2 wheel drive or 4. The steering locks up when turning left. Hard lock too. But I'f I release pressure on the steering wheel it frees up. I' was sure it was a pressure issue so I changed the pump. No help.

It is worse in 4x4 because I can't always release the pressure. But in 2x4 on the street it will lock up and head for the guard rail.

There is a very very slight leak in the pressure hose, that is going to be changed. But since I'm probably going to have to pull the gear box to change the hose i'm wondering if anyone has experienced this and found out it was the gearbox?

What would be a good upgrade if I do have change the gear box?

My drag link is bent slightly and does rub on the tierod when turning but it's always been like that.

    My auto replies-

Not ready for tons and links-
Not going Hydro assist or full-
Cannot afford an LS swap right now.

I just want to be able to turn!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance!

Tie rod ends are good. Ball joints are good too. No play on the pitman arm. It is a 4" drop. Forgot to mention that.

Durango steering box is a great bolt on upgrade.

Have you tried to recreate the lock up issue at home? Have someone start it up and turn the wheels while you inspect the steerinf

I have seen racks get hot and lock up but never a box. Jack up the front end and try to recreate it.

Last year in Moab, my buddies yj steering box was getting so hot he lost power steering, but never locked up. Granted he was on 40s and a D60. He added an inline finned fluid cooler and issue was solved.

    What year Durango?

It's very easy to recreate the issue. Sitting in the dirt in park or neutral it will do it. Locks up hard turning to the left. Then just a fast release of turning pressure and it frees up.

Hmmm. Had not thought of that. I'll have to get another pair of eyes over to help check that out.

Yes, my CAD is still in there and operational, AFAIK. The light on the dash indication the 4x4 is on is not illuminated when this is happening.

I've been wondering if it's the locker doing it because of the way it breaks free. But there's certainly no noise from the dif when it does. And in 2x4 the front drive shaft does nothing to engage the locker.

I'm going to drive it over to a friends house tonight so we can watch the steering column shaft.

I've had mine hot, so hot it was dumping fluid from around the sector shaft. My money is on the box. If I actually had money.

98-99 Dodge Durango, some say get it with the snow plow option. Iím not sure what the difference is off the top of my head. I used a Ď98 when I did the swap 4-5 years ago.

If you google it, it should pop up with all the info you need as itís a popular swap. Itís a direct swap so itís pretty straight forward.

    Thanks.

I also want to add that it seems to do it when the wheels are facing straight forward. At least most of the time.

Just figured with another 300 hp those front wheels would be in the air and easier to turn.

did this start after a change of some part, or something that has gradually gotten worse, or, just popped up for no good reason.
Also, FWIW, I have a lockright in my dana 30 and it is always locked, no steering locking up on mine.
