    Mini-Split A/C systems ??

I figure since I have a jeep, with square eyes, I need a cool place to work on it. I'm looking for pros and cons of Window units versus Mini-Split.

    Details-
The garage is about 400 sq feet. Block on two walls (shared with house) 2x4 construction insulated R13 and 1/2" drywall on the other wall (this wall does not see direct sunlight). The garage door is insulated. I haven't insulated the ceiling yet but will either before or shortly after the A/C is installed.

    BTU?
I'm thinking 24K. But I'm being told 12K would be enough. Should I compromise and get 18K?

Has anyone installed one of these mini-splits? If so, can I get some feed back.

    TIA

I had one at my old house on an addition. It was awesome, would have been perfect for the garage. Supposed to be pretty efficient too.

    Mini-Split A/C systems ??

Mini splits are wayyyyyy more efficient than a window unit , much quieter, only a 2" hole in the wall vs a big 2foot square hole.

Only con is that they are super expensive.

We install these all the time so if you want a quote let me know , I can do it on the side or thru the company .

As far as size goes get he biggest you can afford . We install a lot in garages and garage based work shops. The thing is most people don't want to keep they're garage 78* year round they just want it cool when they're working in it . So the bigger the unit the quicker it will cool down . And it will also be able to cool it better if your generating any heat.

Keep in mind it only takes one time of opening the door and all that cold air goes outside. If you have ever felt how much heat comes off a car when you pull it inside your garage , keep that in mind too.

This is coming from years of experience installing these things.

There's 12,000 btus per ton . And we usually figure 400sqft per ton in a good well insulated house but garages and commercial is usually 200-300sqft per ton .

I would go at least a 24000 btu

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm going to go with the 24K BTU split. Going through a friend, I think I get the system for 1150.00, or there abouts. That's 4 or 5 hundred more than the the window unit, but I agree it will be money well spent.

I plan to expand in the near future. Can I purchase a two zone mini spit right now and only run one zone? Or do both evaporators have to be hooked up in order to operate a two zone system?

Here is the answer I got back from Alpine.

Yes, you can purchase a two zone and run only one zone at a time. Both need to be attached for the condenser to work. You would have two 12K BTU wall units on a two zone, single would be just one 24K BTU unit.

So, since I want 24K in the garage this will not be an option.
