Issue after replacing head 02 TJ 4.0.

Engine ran great for about 500 miles. Started to make a clanging noise. I pulled the head to replace lifters in number 1 cylinder. That was loose rocker was. Put back together and noise still there. So I replaced all rocker arms and pushrods. Noise still there. Not sure what try next. Any ideas? Suggestions would be appreciated.

does it occur all the time or only in certain conditions? Maybe something tightened that's come loose? Intake / exhaust bolts tight? Accessory brackets tight? Spark plugs tight?

Did you just replace the head or anything else? Didn't take the timing cover off did you?

Clanging like metal on metal? Front or back, top or bottom of engine?

Only pulled the head nothing else. The noise is toward the front top of engine. Pulled can belt to see if it was something the belt drives. Noise was still there. Is it possible that is a valve issue? I am pretty good pulling the head. Can take head back to machine shop that put the new valves in it.

It does sound like metal on metal.

Think I have figured this out. Piston slap in number 1 cylinder. Will be pulling oil pan on Saturday to validate.
