Cool ARTEC Beta Kit/Superduty TJ Build~

I was graciously chosen to participate in Artec's beta program to test their new TJ Superduty 1 Ton Swap Kits. I was going to try and make their JK swap kit work with these axles, but that probably would have been a nightmare, especially with my limited fab skills AND I would of had a JK part on my TJ... blasphemy!

A few months ago I learned Artec had the TJ kit in the works, so all was put on hold in anticipation of this kit. Last week they posted looking for beta testers, I applied for it and here we go! Artec Industries is changing the way they bring products to the market and want to get us DIY people involved (including shops) to help them do final beta testing on new products before they release them. I really didn't think I would be chosen, but as it turned out, they were looking for some people just like me, your average weekend DIY/wheeler.
They consider us DIY guys the bread and butter of their company and this really shows in everything I have ever purchased from them or seen in person; their products are simple and a beautiful art form all their own! If you have ever worked with or even handled any of their products, you know what I mean!

    The axles~
From a 2005 Ford Superduty, front D60 and a 10.5" rear Sterling, from eBay.
These axles are pure beef, with 35 spline inner and outer shafts, tubes are 3.75" in diameter with .5" thick wall. The old go to tons use to be the ’78-’79 Ford F-350 kingpin axles, but those are getting harder to find and fetch a hefty price. The SD axles can be had for Under $1k and are inherently stronger and very easy to find. Im sure we will be hearing more and more about these SD axles in the neat future!

I still have to figure out a lot of things, but hydro assist of course, maybe full hydro PSC, but still looking at options. Reid High-steer knuckle kit etc. Once I have the kit in my hands, I will go from there and get busy.

I will be leaning heavily on my friends and their vast skills and brain power to make this complete, I also welcome any input, ideas and suggestions ya'all may have, thanks for looking!

Using a plasma cutter, grinder and a Sawzall, we went to work on removing the stock metal mounts from the front axle, I still have some grinding to do, but it will be ready when the kit arrives.

Had to cut 2" of the housing off; this part scared the dukie outa me, but was fairly easy~

The truss pictured is from the JK kit, will not be using that~

i dont think i knew that you could cut a few inches off the cast part of the front axle. Thats pretty cool and why the snow fighter axles were so sought after. They are one of the only axles that have a "tube" outside of the housing to mount brackets to.

You can tell it's a JK truss by the light bar tabs. And quit it with the blasphemy cracks, or I'll drop a clockspring in some remote recess of your junk.

    Congrats on the pick!

Finally finished the grinding, and flapper wheeling, tubes are clean and ready for the swap kit!
Now to work on removing the rust layer on the knuckles; would a media blaster, like HF sells work for this anyone know??

It should. If your using the glass beads abrasive blaster you need a pretty good air source. 12 to 15 cfm at 90lbs. They also sell soda blasters that only need about 10 cfm at 90 lbs and use baking soda. Cleanup is easier too.

Cool, I'm gonna try that on some small parts and see what happens.

Re: ARTEC Beta Kit/Superduty TJ Build~

Got an abrasive blaster from HF today (#37025) and a few bags of fine Black Diamond blasting media at Tractor Supply.
I forgot to get replacement filters for my respirator, so only blasted for a few minutes. This silica media is way bad on the lungs and a good respirator is mandatory!
Works rather well, but I'm going to try a more course particle tomorrow AND move everything to the yard; this stuff is hella messy!!
