I mostly know the mountain so that's going to be a long haul, but perhaps worth it. Upper Log camp on the WMAT res comes to mind. Catch the road to it just south of Hon-Dah and it is paved the whole way in until you cross the bridge over the north fork of the White River. But then you are there at the campground. After that getting to the individual campsites, I am sure if I could get into any site there with an '85 CVCC (sometimes in a foot or so of snow), you can get there too. It isn't much advertised and therefore not that well known

Otherwise I have been know when all else is full, go the Reservation Lake (no stream just a lake). The road to it is pretty much paved all the way to Big Lake (where all the crowds will be) and then pretty much graded gravel the rest of the way.

Edit: About Upper Log, I found this old video:

Up to about 1:08 they are on the way there, so the dirt road has been paved since (2014). And the campgrounds are on both sides of the river. The shots where the river is on their right are accessed on the turnoff just before the bridge, the others are after you cross the bridge and take a left and the "T".

If you are willing to drive that far the black river just southwest of alpine is an awesome place.

Thanks everyone, really do appreciate the feedback. There are some good options in here and I'm looking at all of them.

    Thanks again...

Forgot about Greer. That's probably because it will be a zoo for this coming weekend. Everybody goes to Greer.

Off topic, never, ever ever stay at the Colorado Bell. Holy hell what a ****hole. It's a maze too, took me 8 hallways and 5 doors, 2 elevators and a flight of stairs to find my room. Eff that place.

I was at Black River one time a long time ago. I went for a long walk following the river. I saw a bear track in the mud next to the water. I looked around and didn't see the bear but when I looked back at the track it was filling with water. The hair on the back of my neck stood up and hightailed it back to camp. Haven't been back since that trip. That's not why I haven't been back, I just haven't been back.

    Hehe.

When I go camping, I don't RV, I don't trailer, I don't tent. I used to just throw a ground blanket with a bag. I have 'graduated' to using a cot. Folks always shake their heads at me and say, "Aren't you scared?". Nope. That is part of what it says in my sig line, "well stocked when I travel". I am loaded for bear.

And usually loaded with beer, so that probably helps too, hehehe.

Yep. Cot and sleeping bag and a big ice chest and chair. That's all I need.

Re: Camping with flowing water during the AZ Summer?

I've been tent camping all my life, but there was a time when I was a boy where I was required to camp with no tent - blanket and a bag on the ground as you say. It was fun when it was bone dry outside in a place with no insects to speak of (mainly, mosquitos). I do find the notion that a tent protects you from any "danger" is sort of funny though. It's a nylon membrane lol, it just keeps bugs and water out.

Anyway, I did a lot of backpacking when I was younger as well and at that time, my 7 lb one man backpacker tent was choice with my little shorty roll up air mattress and a mummy bag. As a young man, that little tent was perfect and hell, I have continued using it as recently as last year when my wife is not camping with me. Since I can't even sit upright in it now without rubbing my head against the top, however, it is definitely not the most luxurious of options. Imagine that, I've owned that same tent for 26 years and it's never failed me once. They don't make them like that anymore.

I went through that phase long ago. Thinking that a gun on my side would protect me from a bear or lion attack while passed out from drinking too much and wrapped up in a bag...

some friends and I used to sleep on the ground at lake peasant all the time. That was then. Now, I like climate control, running water, a soft bed and the throne!
