Super duty strange sound at high rpm

Someone posted this a while back. High whirring on and off with ac on. Mine started doing it drove nuts could feel the ac clutch cycling and made an obnoxious sound. Air still blew cold till recently had it checked and yep it was a pound low. No more problemo. Just an FYI to that other dude in case he never figured it out

I don't think it was me who posted about it, but I had a similar issue on mine last summer. Ended up having to replace the entire a/c system.

yeah that was I was hoping don't have to do. compressor is iffy but so far so good. I guess it reverts to a limp mode when low on freon

Re: Super duty strange sound at high rpm

Low refrigerant charge will cause the compressor to short cycle. The compressor typically cycles on for ~90 seconds then turns off when the low side pressure drops to the low pressure switch set point, stays off ~15 seconds, then repeats. Low refrigerant charge means the low pressure set point is reached very quickly, so the compressor is constantly cycling on/off. If the refrigerant charge gets too low, the system will never turn on.
