That's business band, and I don't see why it would be blocked. Are you saying it transmits on other frequencies, but not that one?

I went back to the video that I saw. It could be that I was trying to reset a channel that I had already used before and you can't edit those. You have to press 2, then 8 and enter the channel to delete it first. Then you can reprogram to transmit, receive, and save. I might have it fixed now. I just need to wait till I'm on my next run to test it out.

We had one that was showing the correct frequency on the top line, but not the bottom line. We'd change the bottom line and the radio would work, but it would change back. ???

I don't much about these hand helds. Mine doesn't show two frequencies like that.

The AB switch moves you between using/controlling the top and bottom. It's useful if you want to jump between two channels a lot. In one area I go to a lot the "local channel" is one thing, and then my group uses something else. I bounce to the local occasionally to see what's up in general or contact someone on the trail that's not with our group.

I'll use Chirp for programming channels and duplex. If I just want to talk simplex I'll switch to frequency mode.

Is a kenwood th-28a/28e for $30 a good deal? It powers on. I know nothing else.

    Bill,
You do realize that this is an amateur radio and that you need to be licensed with the FCC to use it, right? The licensing test goes over most of what the reviews are talking about.

Yes, I do. I had a CB license back in the day (late 70's) when you had to have that too. I do plan on getting the license now, but didn't want to get a license before I bought one.

That's not entirely correct. There are frequencies it can be used on without a license.

Wonderful, I was just making sure. I wouldn't want you to accidentally start breaking the law.

It looks like you need to do a mod to make it work on the FRS (unlicensed) and the GMRS (licensed) frequencies. Out of the box it's a dual-band amateur radio. It's not technically legal to use a non-certified device on the FRS or GMRS frequencies, but people still do it.

Well there's MURS, which this should work on. That's what I primarily meant. And the FRS/GMRS usage is unaffected by your license. You can also use it on marine VHF if you're on the water. Etc. Additionally while it's illegal to use it on the race radio/business frequencies without a business frequency license, we all know that "everyone" uses those unlicensed and nobody cares.
