The cool thing about CHIRP is that it has some built in frequencies you can import as well as import from radioreference.com and repeater freqs based on state and county. The tricky part is using the correct driver.

I'm still looking for an old thread I can bump, maybe tomorrow chili, lol.

I second this! There seems to have been a lot more intellect back then.

But on way out Wednesday or throw back Thursday? That's the important part.

Yea, isn't it cute that the same people who jumped all over me for posting about using it are now using it? At least are watching their grammar and spelling!

Maybe I'll get one now. But wait, isn't it illegal?

You do realize that when you do that it messes up people's precious "new post feed", right?

is there any difference between the new and old models (other than some slight style changes)?

Re: New version of the Baofeng UV-5R and deals on old version

I think Carlos and someone else I was talking to about these at the Westside meet/greet a couple weeks ago.
I was going to pick up a pair, but I think they bought a package deal through FB, extended battery and microphone?
Wasn't me, I wasn't there. I don't know about the package deal. I did just order the extended battery and the cable that charges it directly from the Jeep. Under $20 for both on Amazon.

As to the mic, I absolutely love the Baofeng mic that I have, and many of my friends bought in the past. But the latest friend to get one got a different mic that sucks. So I'm not sure what the answer is.

The tricky part is using the correct driver.
Only if you buy a junk cable. I finally gave up on my two junk cables and bought a real one, $20. PERFECT, with no drivers. Plug and go (on a Mac, not sure about Windows). All of the $7 cables have a clone FTDI chip and FTDI is trying to make their drivers not work with the clones.

This is the only mic that I have found to be worth a crap - although using no mic is best for clarity. Give it a try:

This is the mic that my friend has a problem with:

Again, I've only seen that one he has, and don't know if it's defective or they all suck.

Here is the one we know works great:

One of those screwballs jumped out from his booth at a Jeep show to ask me, "What radio do you use on the trail" loudly. So I loudly explained that I use the exact same radio which you can get from Amazon for $35. That resulted in basically clearing out his booth as everyone asked me about it. I had it clipped to my belt at the time, so everyone could see it was the same. (Well actually, the colored one is a few bucks more than black.)

I'm tempted to get a catchy domain name and start selling them for $75.

Anyone having a problem transmitting with the Baofeng ? My handheld was doing fine. Then lately, when I try to key in a new frequency, I can receive but can't figure out why it won't transmit.
