Thread: New version of the Baofeng UV-5R and deals on old version

New version of the Baofeng UV-5R and deals on old version

The Baofeng UV-5R is a hell of a bargain, and a good radio all around. There's a new version of it now, and the original is being sold for $24 now. The new one is $34, still so dirt cheap.

There is also a new version of the speaker-mic, and unfortunately, that seems not so good. I've only tried one, but it was extremely muffled/garbled. Useless. Could be one defective one, don't know. The old version has a plastic clip and the new one is metal. The plastic works better to clip to the seat belt where I like to put mine.

I love these radios so much. I bought six UV-82s last month for $25/each.

And for those who don't know, the UV-5R is the same radio sold by Rugged Radio as the RH-5R for $100.

I also have a $500 Yaesu VX-8DR. Guess which radio I'd rather use...

All of my regular wheeling partners now have these. So much nicer than CB.

My buddy just bought 3 Motorola 2 ways for the beach in Mexico. 35 mile range from mountain top to valley and only 6 miles on open water. Not expecting much from these, prolly will send em back to Amazon after we try em.

Re: New version of the Baofeng UV-5R and deals on old version

I bought a UV-5R for $26 on amazon a few months ago, added the nigoya 771(?) and the extended battery. Pretty nice. Just bought an UV-5RTP on eBay last week. The seller said it had a 'extra long antenna' and came with the car charger. Well the 'extra long antenna' was not much longer than the stock one, but oh well, the pricing was comparable with amazon and amazon seems to really stall on shipping these days.

I'm so far out where I live, I don't have any good info on TX, but for RX they both seem very good.

I've been wanting to ask this question in a thread about how many are switching from CB to these . . . . .

I have 4 UV5Rs. Great radios. Carlos I just bought that speaker-mic in the hopes I got a good one. Sorry to hear your experience with it, I hope mine is better!

Maybe you could find one from 2004 and bump it.

Thanks for the links. This thread made me laugh. When you mention marine radios the internet cops are all over you. These operate on some of the same frequencies we use. Lol

Please let me know what results you get. I'd like to know if I should recommend them to others or not.

As far as marine frequencies, or any frequencies, you just have to choose wisely. MURS frequencies are legal to use unlicensed. VHF race radio and business band are supposed to have a basic license (not ham license), but nobody cares really. Stay off the important frequencies, like public safety, marine 16, etc.

I have a CHIRP programming file that anyone can dump in the radio with the data cable, and anyone is welcome to stop by my house to use my cable and load stuff. It has all the most useful stuff in it.

I think Carlos and someone else I was talking to about these at the Westside meet/greet a couple weeks ago.
I was going to pick up a pair, but I think they bought a package deal through FB, extended battery and microphone?

What's a decent mic? The recommended beofeng mic reviews say it's pretty quiet.
