    chevy 454 questions

well the time has come to toss a little bit of cash at my dually. with that said I have a few things I need to address on the big block. the first thing I'd like to do is delete the air pump and the rest of the associated crap. included in this is to redo all the vacuum lines and install headers and a complete exhaust. I'm also thinking about doing a cam and lifters as I have a lifter that's been sticking with the cold weather. so, does anyone have experience in a bbc? maybe someone knows a guru? I have questions and I need answers. this is a 1988 chevy c30 454tbi/400. thanks ahead of time.

If you remove the A.I.R. system you wont pass emissions for tampering.

    Re: chevy 454 questions

I don't know what help I can be of, but I worked on them daily for three years in the oil field as they drove my compressors. What I can tell you is the BBC liked to eat cams. These were on vortec engines that ran 24/7 at 2100 RPM with oil changes done every 45 days and running on unrefined NG with co2 content ect. The engines are definetly robust. We used all kinds of makes and brands of cams, lifters and pushrods. The actual GM branded stuff seemed to be the better. We even cryo'ed the cams but it did not help.

If there are oiling mods you can do to it I would research that. Similar to the AMC engine oil mods. See if you can tap into an oil gally and run oil lines to spray on the cam where the distributor gear is. Use a quality HV oil pump (again GM was the best on durability) and quality synthetic oil.

So definetly look at the GM performance catalog and see what they offer for cams and lifters. I think your year should be roller lifters which I would stick with. If it were me as well, and it's easy enough, pull the heads and have them gone through. The GM engines liked to start to recess their valves. The bottom ends on these suckers are bullet proof.
My name is Daniel. I pretty much STILL do what I want.

thanks for the input dan, it is appreciated. luckily the motor only has 35k miles on her (trans has 34k) and she runs pretty damn good. so I'm hoping to not have to crack her open for anything.
