    Re: 85 CJ7 teardown

Yeah, I washed it down per instructions from my mechanic.

The only things im missing from the powerplant are sensors, an AC bypass plate, and the idler assembly. Gonna junkyard those last two bits. Leaning toward Dakota Digital, so im holding off on sending units for now.

Im also leaning toward the hesco kit as well.

Im not decided on CJ7 body vs YJ body yet, but i may go YJ body, which means my thread is now in the wrong subforum...

    Re: 85 CJ7 teardown

lots of things going on with this build. I keep forgetting to come in here and post.

I found a 1990 YJ body in Tucson and towed it up here. got it completely stripped and lined the bottom with 3M underbody coating after scraping off the old oily, dusty, crap. I also cut a new hole for the gas filler on the right side. I'll get the left filled at some point before I do the Monstaliner OD Green kit inside and out.

New parts have been showing up left and right, my credit cards hate me right now.

Hoping to wrangle a few bodies from the neighborhood tomorrow morning to put the body on and start getting it ready for new exhaust and emissions.

waiting on my steering column, then timing the distributor properly and finally exhaust, emissions, and registration.

waiting until fall to do the Monstaliner. Hopefully they have an Anvil Grey tint by then!

I can't thank you enough for this thread, and the tons of pics you're posting! I'm studying every pic closely, and each one takes me back to the time my step dad and I restored a 1975 CJ5 about 10 years ago. So much fun to see those components torn apart, and put back together again. Please keep this thread going!

    Re: 85 CJ7 teardown

AZHoosier - Glad you like all the pictures. I have a boatload from documenting the teardown, but none are annotated, so they probably wouldn't be of much help at this point. I've replaced so many parts with new, bought more bolts and nuts than any one person should ever have to buy, and still have to buy a few more to finish it off. Looks like my oil and fuel gauges might be shot, but everything else seems to be working for the second that it fires up before dying again. I think the timing is still off by a hair.

As far as conversions go, I had to clean up a LOT more of the jeep to get it ready, but it's been worth it so far.

    Re: 85 CJ7 teardown

For future reference, blue is hot on start only, I hooked the starter to that wire. Red w/ white tracer is hot on start and run, I hooked engine harness, fan relay, and alternator to that even though the Hesco doc said I needed to hook everything to the blue wire.
