    1958 Chevy van project

I picked up a 1958 Chevy 1 ton step van a couple months ago. Still working out the details of the build but figured I'd post up here to share progress.

I want to bag it so I can lower it down, but doing so will require a lot of work on the frame. May just put the new drivetrain in and get it driving for now.

I'd fill the back with subwoofers.

if you bag it, make sure you can set it on the ground and be able to pull the wheels up off the ground (if possible)

Similar to the van in lost in translation show. His is silver with some petina. On bags also.

Sweet!!! Big shoes, slam it to the ground, and just clear coat the body - that patina is awesome looking!

Yeah I agree on the patina. Going to clean up a few spots but keep the exterior pretty much as is. The "Beef is good food" sticker on the side is my favorite part.

I picked up some new 16" wheels... stock wheels are 16.5" and hard to find rubber for that.

Slamming it is going to be a little tricky but we'll figure it out. The front I beam axle makes it tricky.

The front i beam makes it easy. You can mod yours to be a drop or build a new one.

I spent some time reading up on this last night and yeah, it doesn't seem all that complicated. There are some conversion kits that look pretty good. I have had at least three different shops tell me I'd need to replace the i beam with independent suspension to drop it down. Don't think I ever heard exactly why though.

I'm now leaning towards keeping ride height as is and running some all terrains on it. Maybe take it camping or something.

The work it would take to make that a worth while camping rig would be daunting to say the least. After getting it going you will be stuck with the most top heavy rig.

It ain't mine so make your own decision on it, but your initial plan of bagging it would be what i would do.

However if you want to lift it you could always pick up some 36 inch military tires from alphatread for those 16.5s

Not offroad/overland camping or anything, just something that could go down the fire roads up north or whatever.
