Our son just notified us that he PASSED his FE senior mechanical engineering exam, he had been pretty stressed about it. I guess if you don't pass, you don't graduate. He is really smart, by-the-way![]()

Working for a living is highly over-rated...
Nice work to all involved!
Once you get done celebrating... Demlockian needs a little engineering on a spare tire carrier, I see.![]()
Good judgement comes from experience. Experience more often than not comes from bad judgement.
Very cool. Where does he go to school?
Congrats. That ain't easy.

The FE exam is not necessary to graduate with a bachelors engineering degree but it is open early to seniors in any ABET-accredited bachelors engineering program and it is open to anyone that has graduated with an ABET engineering degree. The test is important because it is the first step if you want to become a professional engineer. The Senior year is the best time to take it because usually students are not hindered by a job and have material fresh in their minds and thus has an 82% pass rate. It is a hard test, a 8 hr multiple choice exam with no outside materials, once you pass you can become an engineer in training (EIT) where you can start an apprenticeship under a professional engineer, it takes two months to grade the test. Professional engineers legally get the job title "engineer" and may prepare, sign, seal and submit engineering plans and drawings for public projects and it usually takes 4+ years to become a PE along with more tests. Congrats to your son, I am taking mine in April and not looking forward to it.

Our son graduates today from the University of Utah with a mechanical engineering degree and this morning was offered an engineering position in his home town. Doesn't get much better than that!
