I would like to go for a run on the 21st of this month, its a monday and a holiday. I'm hoping that a few people who have that day off would like to go exploring.

I have covered just about everything around me in 'copa, and a lot of stuff east of Mesa and around the 4 peaks area. Looking for something new. I like to go exploring and see new stuff.

I am interested in anything between flagstaff/payson and tucson. anything that is a 1.0-2.5 trail would be fine, I would like a bit of a challenge, but mostly I would like a great day out seeing more parts of our state. I don't know where to go, seems like every time I pick a trail it's closed... so any suggestions would be great.

I would like to be on the trail by 9am, and headed home by mid afternoon.

I was told i should post minimum requirements, but since I think I have probably the most minimum ability here I'll just state what I have...

    tow hooks
    Skid plates
    30" tires
    10" of ground clearance.
I don't have lockers, but I have Break lock differentials, not as good as lockers, but better than open diffs.
    Low range CVT.

I'm not looking to rock crawl, but I enjoy stuff that gets one or two wheels in the air (which I have done a few times) so if you are free that day, have a trail you've been wanting to do, let me know. In the mean time I will be looking at a few trails myself, and if nobody has a suggestion I will make one, But for now, just wondering who might be interested in going. (somebody suggested young up the rim on the old rim road, but I'm afraid it would have too much snow on it... I will have to do some research, or if somebody lives in that area and can give me a heads up, that would be awesome.)

Please keep this thread on topic, I closed the last one because nobody was talking about going out on a trail, just a bunch of people who had opinions on my patriot. I will gladly start a thread where you can say what ever you want about it, please keep this thread to running a trail on 1/21.

    Hey, thanks for the invite!

Would it be alright if I invite a few more people? Most of the people I work with, that have Jeeps, will be off that day.

I am open to odds and ends of scenic trails, with a few obstacles, and like the schedule you picked --not too early, not too late -- (I tend to be a night owl as well ) Would you mind if I dig up a few trails, that look good to me, in my Fun Treks book and post back here?

You've probably heard people mention the "Wells book". Charles Wells co-authored this one. I like it because it doesn't get into complicated trail ratings (Uses "Easy", "Moderate", and "Difficult") and gives good directions and GPS coordinates to 100 trails in AZ. (There are other books, by the same authors, available that cover other states as well). I have lived here all of my life, but still have a lot of trails to discover.

Here's a link to an example of the Fun Treks book.
    http://www.funtreks.com/docs/FREE%20...%20Edition.pdf

I paid $30 for mine, but it looks like they are on sale now for less than $25.

I am in Chandler, so if we decide to wheel closer to Maricopa, I can probably help with transport of your friend to and from.

    Thanks again,

    Tim

I'm going through http://www.everytrail.com to see if there is anything that strikes my fancy, only problem I'm running into is a plethora of trails without much information on quality of the trail.

This looks interesting, wonder if its open:
    http://www.everytrail.com/guide/schnebly-hill-4x4-road
But that's quite a long way to drive for such a short trail.. would have to have a 2nd trail up there to do at least, but would love to hit some trails in sedona, Never gone wheeling there.

    and there is this one:
    http://www.everytrail.com/guide/box-...-trail-arizona
I started down it a few weeks ago, but it was on a whim after getting off the 4 peaks trail and so didn't get very far before it started to get dark.

I wonder if we can do schnebly hill, Greasy spoon, soldier's pass, and broken arrow, or a combination of those trails in one day?
These people seem to have a good list of trails with trail descriptions:

If you see a few you're interested in, I can see if they are in my book.

Schnebly Hill is a great trail! Last time (if I remember correctly) we did it top down and had lunch afterward. It took us a few hours to get from Chandler to the top though, so we'd need to start a bit earlier. We could probably check with Nena Barlow (Owns Barlow Jeep Rentals and Barlow Jeep School in Sedona) They are the experts on Sedona trails. Maybe Schnebly Hill in the morning and Broken Arrow or another trail in the afternoon. As long as you don't mind driving home in the dark -- more of a full day.

If we decided to stay closer, maybe Box Canyon or Bulldog Canyon would be good. Here's a link to request a free permit for Bulldog Canyon (has gate codes and a nice map) http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/tonto...35555&actid=93

It may be possible. I'll ask Nena or Sue at Barlow's.

Yes, ask at Barlow's. Or we could do one of the other trails that would be more of a full day like Mingus Mountain.

I'm leaning towards Sedona, Mostly because the last time I was there was when I was 10 or 11. To do that I could probably meet up in town at 7ish, just so we have plenty of time. I don't mind driving home in the dark, just wanna be off the trail before then.

OK sounds like a good start. I'll send her a message. Really like the site you found! A lot of great information!
    Like this check list.

Mingus may be closed this time of year for snow and washed out conditions...

ah, didn't think of that... Well lets see what they say. I would love to hit two trails, one before lunch and one after, so if there are two trails that are close together that would be great! I Think I would happy with anything up there.

If you decide to stay in the desert there are alot of nice scenic 2 track roads on the Barry Goldwater range. It isn't too far from Maricopa. All you need is a free permit available at Luke air force base or the base at Gila Bend. You have to watch a 20 minute video about unexploded ordinance and sign a hold harmless agreement.

Snkskner94 - thanks for that info. maybe save it for a summer run.

Dirthopper - We'll see what the trails look like in sedona, there might be too much snow right now to go up there, box canyon would be my next pick

ehall - Thanks for that information. Do you have a link to a website or a contact? I am compiling a list of possible trails for the future. I've gotten quite a list so far, and that way next time I can be more specific of where I would like to go. (I plan on doing something once a month.)
