Double Cardan Drive Shaft Rebuild - Help Needed

I'm about to cry uncle (and/or burn my Jeep to the ground)...

My '98 XJ has SYE kit with a Tom Woods drive shaft in it. Not that long ago I started hearing a bunch of clicking/knocking coming from the rear of the vehicle at speeds of 5 mph up to around 30 mph. A few wheeling trips later these sounds started being accompanied by a loud squawking (no angry sparrows here) when decelerating from speeds over 30 mph.

From what I'm able to tell, it would seem that the double cardan joint in the rear drive shaft is toast. With the drive shaft in the Jeep I was able to get quite a bit of movement from the double cardan joint. With the drive shaft now out of the Jeep, movement of the double cardan joint is anything but smooth and tight. It appears that the u-joints are all fine and well greased. The problem seems to be the centering ball.

The part number stamped in the double cardan joint is Spicer C2-26-309.

Why I'm about to cry uncle (and/or burn my Jeep to the ground):

    1) I've replaced plenty of u-joints in my life. I have never done a centering ball, but I would like to learn. The information I'm finding, however, is chaotic at best.

    2) No parts stores (local or Internet) seem able to help me with replacement parts. I know that rebuild kits exist out there. Can't anyone cross reference part numbers anymore without asking for the year, make, and model of a vehicle?

    3) A call to Tom Wood's Drive Shafts yielded a replacement part number for a yoke that isn't even compatible with the double cardan joint I have.

    4) Internet research (literally hours and hours of it!) only adds to the confusion and frustration I'm feeling. Everything written on the Internet must be true, right? *sigh* On the other hand, I guess I'm not the only one confused and frustrated based on numerous forum posts I've read.

    5) Local drive shaft shops are quoting between $120 to $180 to replace the ball. That was even after I told them I was willing to reuse the existing u-joints to save some money. I think not!

    6) Need I go on?!

Can someone please help me and/or point me in the right direction?

*shrug* The u-joint caps are labeled Spicer P051 if that helps. LOL!

The only other thing I see is that the "H" part is stamped Spicer C2-26-309.

Those aren't quite right. The double cardan joint I have looks more like this.

I sure hope not. I haven't pulled it apart yet since I can't locate any parts to rebuild it with.

measure the ujoints to figure out what size you have.

    Series Width Cap
    1210 2.438 1.062 All 4 caps
    1310 3.219 1.062 All 4 caps
    1330 3.622 1.062 All 4 caps

    1310 BC (Ford) 3.219 2 @ 1.062 (shaft) 2 @ 1.125 (pinion)
    1330 BC (Ford) 3.622 2 @ 1.062 (shaft) 2 @ 1.125 (pinion)

    1350 3.622 1.188 All 4 caps
    1410 4.188 1.188 All 4 caps

those are the same. The one you have pictured has a flange on it instead of a yoke. It also shows the H and weldable end to the tube.

More than likely the centering pin is broken. Arizona drive shaft has all the parts you need. I have bought all these parts from them in that past. If its centering g pin you will have to get new one welded on.

Re: Double Cardan Drive Shaft Rebuild - Help Needed

I'm going to attempt to pull the u-joints this evening. That way I can get a good look at what's really going on and provide the proper measurements in this thread.

    More to come...
