Jeff you use a 6 foot carpenters level to "eyeball" across the tubes. Then you preload it just a little bit over and weld on the bracing with the pre load applied (chains and jack still in place). You can use a carpenters level or a piece of straight 2x4 by 6 foot long or a tube or pipe. Anything straight to sight across and look at the axle tubes.

    Ill reply for him.
What kind of welder? I know how to do it without a welder. I wouldnt do it with a mig though. Blah blah blah about theories, heat, penetration, etc... If I had to do it with a mig it would have to be blah blah blah about physics, amps, wire size, etc. I would tig it like I did on the rig I sold to (who f.kn cares what his name is and a rig you once had)

Lol, ok, now im staying out of it.

Re: Axle straightening (front JK dana 44)

    ...munching popcorn....

I have a freshly bent JK D44 front housing. It's so slight, that the only reason we knew it was bent is because it has an inner sleeve, leaving no room for even the slightest bend without causing the axle shaft to rub. Axle squeaks. At the outer end of the tube, the axle is probably 1/16th-inch off of center, just enough to slightly grind the shaft on the inner sleeve. We kept the housing for an emergency spare, but I don't see how it could possibly be straightened, by "eye ball", and since it is sleeved. Fun challenge?
