Re: Sound dampening material FATMAT installation in my XJ

The need for firewall and transmission hump insulation was apparent last summer. I was coming back from Strawberry with a trailer with the A/C on and got stuck in almost gridlock traffic. I had already taken out the factory carpeting, so it was pretty warm. With no convection to help cool off the drivetrain, it put a lot of load on the A/C and a lot of heat behind the dash. I think that's what overtaxed the factory wiring connectors for the fan. So before I get too serious about heating and cooling, I'm getting insulation back in, and covering it with a vinyl mat. So, yeah, I'll be looking into this stuff. Thanks for writing this install.

yeah old thread but just wondering how this insulation worked long term.

My jeep turns 20 this month and I'm looking to improve some things I dont like about it. Temps are a biggy, same for the noise of the soft top. Think a sail cloth is in my near future. Seats next

Bob flopped that XJ in 2014 and it took extensive body damage, virtually crushed the lid. Was a real shame as it was a very nice looking rig, but thankfully nobody was hurt. He isn't really around here anymore either. I'm not sure if he repaired that rig or if he moved onto something else.

Try this to keep heat out: http://www.homedepot.com/p/UltraTouc...word=100656748

I put it in my XJ and it helped a lot with the heat coming from the transmission tunnel. Provides sound dampening as well. Foil side down and then carpet over the top. Price is good too!
