    Jeep Emissions

    Wasn't sure where to put this thread so put it under jeep topics.
    Issue I went to emissions and FAILED.
    Evap system FAIL
    Pressure test FAIL
    Fuel cap PASS
    Final fuel cap results PASS
    Hydrocarbons (HC) in grams / Mile - at 5.16 needs to be 2.00 or less FAIL
    Carbon Monoxide (CO) in grams / Mile - at 28.10 needs to be 20.00 or less FAIL
    Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX) in grams / Mile - at 4.24 needs to be 4.00 or less FAIL
    -------
    Little about my jeep -
    its a 1992 Jeep Cherokee Larado 4x4 4.0l originally a Autotrans.
    It now has -
    AX-15 5 speed manual trans hydro clutch
    4.0L motor out of a 2005 Jeep Wrangler.
    Intake Manifold out of a 2005 Wrangler
    Injectors out of a 2005 Wrangler
    The fuel rail is a 1992 Cherokee.
    Spark plugs 2005 Wranglers.
    Distributer out of the 1992 Cherokee
    Exhaust header for a 1991 Cherokee
    Has all the 2005 accessories Compressor powersteering water pump and the alternator
    Has the 1992 Cherokee back 1/2 on the alternator.
    The PCM is from the 1992 Cherokee.
    3 electric fans on the Radiator
    1 Electric fan on the oil cooler.
    3.55gears 33/12.5r15 tires.
    ------
    Some possible issues I have seen wondering if it could possibly cause a issue.
    1 The water temp sensor is not install due to the 2005 head does not have a port for the sensor on the back top.
    2 The sensor that goes into the thermostat housing is connected or a Check engine light comes on but it is just laying on the intake and not in the coolant port.
    3 The head on the 2005 the intake ports and the Exhaust ports were half the size
    compared to my 1992 head.
    4 The new style intake manifold holds over twice the CC's as my old one.
    5 The injectors dunno if there the same LBs I know there a different spray pattern more atomization.
    6 The intake air temp sensor is in the snorkel instead of the intake.
    7 Coolant temp with my fans on is 180 degrees.
    8 PCM is for a auto trans not for a Manual trans.
    I looked at the Cat and it appeared to be fine its still intacted
    -------
    Problem with the pressure test was the vacuum lines missing on my charcoal cannister.
    and evap system.
    -------
    From the paper they gave me
    CO (ONLY) failures
    Check for overfueling due to:
    -Canister purge system malfunction;
    -Throttle bodyorported fuel injection system malfunction (fuel injectors, fuel lines, fuel pressure, injection pump, injector timing);
    -Engine/fuel Control System (computer) malfuction (system sensors, actuators, CPU);
    -Improper engine coolant mix, improper or malfunctioning engine thermostat.
    HC or HC and CO Failures
    Check for:
    -Ignition system malfunction;
    -Sparkplug malfunction;
    -Ignition wires (Faulty, open, crossed or disconnected);
    -Distributor Module malfunction;
    -Distributor component malfunction (Mechanical/Vacuum advance, points, condensor, distributorcap, crossfire);
    -Catalytic converter efficiency;
    -Catalytic converter air supply;
    - Vaccum leak causing lean misfire (intake manifold, Vacuum operated components and vaccum fittings)
    Nox Failures
    Check for:
    -Abnormal engine operating temperature;
    -Air management system malfunction;
    -Lean air/fuel mixture;
    -Catalytic converter efficiency;
    -Over-advanced off-idle timing.
    Removed Carb and EGR issues since mine has no carb or EGR.
    -------------------

    Wondering.
    1 Should I get my jeep Tuned?
    2 Should I install my old head? and injectors?
    3 get a computer from a manual Cherokee?
    -------------------
    Future plans for my Jeep are as follows.
    Install old head after doing port work and 3 angle valve job and a cam.
    4.88 gears.
    Different Intake tube.
    Then Dyno tuned.

    Sorry I might have mess a bunch but have to run right now.

    Re: Jeep Emissions

    one issue i think it might be a issue is so many different years from so many different parts. Granted i know they all work and should work because nothing really changed. But i would put on your old head, find away to get that water temp sensor in, one other thing i would look at is fuel rails...i doubt they are different, but could be since there is a 13 year difference.

    fix vacuum problem
    make (McGruber?) an outlet for the temp sender... drill / tap housing or "t" fitting onto heater hose or onto intake manifold

    I think I will have to atleast fix the vacuum line to the charcoal canister and put the head on. I was waiting to do the head till after I ported and did the valve job on the head because when I do that they can figure out which cam would be better to use on my jeep. I can't use the new fuel rail because it is a returnless system and the fuel pressure is higher on the new jeep then the old jeeps I think it was by 6psi.
    To get the adjustable pressure reg would cost around $200.

    Re: Jeep Emissions

    Well I have come up with a few thing talking to guys at my work.
    To bring down my HC i need to lean the motor out.
    to bring down my CO I need to lean the motor out.
    To bring dpwn NOx I need to ****** my timing by 4 degrees.
    ------
    But my motor also see that it is -40degress because the sensor is not connected on the cylinder head.
    the other sensor is under hood temp probably 180ish or less.
    then I also have the vacuum leak

    Re: Jeep Emissions

    Well i just went throught emissions! for my FREE test...
    I fixed the vacuum leak it was a decent size that went to the vacuum canister and the a/c actuators.
    install a new like for the fuel tank purge.
    The numbers:
    Hydrocarbons (HC) Now 0.98, Std 2.00, Old 5.16.
    Carbon Monoxide (CO) Now 8.51, Std 20.00, Old 28.10.
    Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) Now 2.55, Std 4.00, Old 4.24.
    Misc C02 633.50 pervious.

    I passed! I felt it was something MAJOR when I was asking people and nervous about the motor I had install in it.
