if built right the stinger will keep the hood and radiator from being crushed in a rollover disabling your jeep.
who ever built the stinger on my jeep went a little over board and built it huge.

The long ones supposedly stop you from rolling frontwise endo and some, in a side roll can help save the radiator. The short ones, like I have, protect the winch and keep anything from coming up over the font bumper into the grill or winch, especially when pushing a vehicle.

Most on this site do not seem to like the long front stinger, my Jeep is not hardcore enough to need it whether I liked it or not!!!

Penis extension. J/K, as stated, for front roll avoidance (though I don't know of anyone that's been saved by one...but I have seen pics on Pirate of "stinger stands"), but most importantly for radiator, winch, and hood protection. As Dean stated, some people may go a "little overboard".
Most of the damage on my rolls seems to come from landing on boulders...which really negates the advantages...but it certainly can't hurt. A hoop that follows the contour of the grill seems to be the best solution for protecting the radiator imo.

And in an unlikely Somersault type roll, I think its also meant to kick you into a side flop rather than right on your lid.

Between my stinger and radiator hoop along with my armored flat fenders, I have save my radiator and hood on more than one occasion.
