    i keep smelling gas

    05 TJ 4cyl

it's only when i shut it off after running a steady speed. i've checked just about everything i can think of.

anyone know somethign specific that would cause this? LDP, gas cap????

i don't have a charcoal canister anymore, i just bypassed it and kept the loop closed like stock. there are no CEL or codes... just wondering if the charcoal canister soaks up the smell? i haven't had the canister in there for about a year and it's just started smelling like raw fuel a couple weeks ago.

Leaking injector? I had similar problem. It was hard to spot, as it didnt leak much, but could definetly smell it.

Tires are like boobs. They always look big until you have played with them for a while. Then you just want a bigger set ...

    Re: i keep smelling gas

    Doc,
I have a 2005 Rubicon. I had Check Engine light coming on occasionaly and the OBD said it was both minor vapor recovery system leak and fuel level sensor. I took it to the dealership and they supposidly installed a new fuel level sensor, which is inside the gas tank. A couple of times since then I have had the same issue you have. I get this real strong odor of gas in the rear of my Jeep. It doesn't happen frequently enough that I can pin down the source of the strong odor. I suspect it is in the NVLD Natural Vacuum Leak Detection system. I don't think it is coincidence that I get the "Check Engine" light whenever I get the strong gas odor. Last time I reset the code with the OBD and I haven't had it happen since. I am going to mention it to the dealership next occasion I have it in, but unless I can get it to occur where they can smell it, I suspect they will be clueless as to the cause.

On my YJ, I've had the o-rings where the fuel line connects to the fuel rail go bad and start squirting fuel (right above the exhaust manifold ). The dealer sells an o-ring kit.

Also, on the YJ, the fuel pump gasket in the top of the tank tends to deteriorate and crack and leak fumes (and fail emissions). Don't know if this is the case with the TJ or not.

it's deffinately coming from the back the more i check around, and it's just like mentioned above where it's not constant enough to be pinpointed. all my emissions stuff is in the back corner of the jeep near the gas tank and that seems to be the source.

Have someone you don't care for hold a lighter around everything you can think of. That should help detect any fuel leaks.

Doc, I have a gas leak detector that would pin point the leak. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/1TC18?Pid=search. Only problem is I am in Mesa. Let me know if you want to barrow it.
