    Dana 44, 30 spline, 33 spline, or 35 spline?

Okay guys, I am building the rear D44 for my Fathers Flatty. Since we are using a ARB, we have the choice of the following shafts, and I can't decide what would be best...

I can go with Chromo 30 spline:
Pros: Already have a spare set of shafts
Cons: Weakest out of the other choices

I can go chromo 33 spline:
    Pros: Less prone to breakage
Cons: Spares are more exspensive and harder to come by

Or I can go 35 spline chromo:
Pros: Extemely strong and very unlikely to break
Cons: Cost $300 more than 33 spline shafts, spares are also $300 more.

So which option you think I should go with? Jeep is 35x15.5 TSL's with around 350 HP and 370 TQ (est.).

I would run number three. I run number two in my TJ with a Detroit locker and no spares. If I break in the rear i'll just fix it at home.

Yeah that's what I'm leaning torwards too also. Would be nice to not have to have a worry about breaking. The R/P would be the weak link with that setup.

I think you'll be fine with the 33 spline axles especially if your running 35's. I ran 33spline D44 with 37's for years and didn't any problems with twisting or breaking an axle.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, aren't all three shafts the same thickness (outside diameter)?
If so, the improved strength is only in the spline count, the more splines the stronger, right?

I have seen the 35 spline ones and they looked bigger to me. Don't know for sure though. I would like to know.

Actually the splines are normally the same size and the shafts are bigger with more splines. Unless you go back to the 16 spline D60's or 19 spline 44's, then the splines are coarser.

What are you going to use this beast for? If you plan on using all those ponies on the rocks, I would go with a bigger axle. If it is a DD or mostly street then 33 or 35.

    Just my opinion.

Jeep will be used for the rocks. I am mostly worried about the combanation of low gearing, high torque, and heavy tires.

Go with 35 spline, I believe I get the 35 spline shafts for the same price as 30 spline, I know they are not $300 more. I can check in the morning if you like

Sure I'll give you a call tomorrow, if I don't than call me, 480-four one five three nine seven four. I would need different axle seals as well for the larger shaft. This is for a scout II Dana 44 rear.

30 spline is right around 1.3 inch round
    33 spline 1.4
35 spline 1.5 inch thick. Much stronger and IMO the way to go! My shafts are all the same price and let's put it this way a bit over $300 for any spline count with bearings and studs.
I can also get the arb if you need. Since its a scout axle they shafts will need to be custom since there is not a 33 or 35 spline kit for that axle.

If I can help pm me or shoot a call tomorrow

Custom 35 spline for the Scout D44. Or get a TJ/LJ D44 and install that with the Mas Grande kit.

That's not a bad idea at all, but I think the Wrangler D44 will be too wide for me. I am at 58.5" WMS on the front D44.

1 1/4 spacers on the front would put you at 61. Wrangler D44s are 60.5" WMS......just some food for thought.
