    HP D30 VS Rubicon D44

I have the idea in my head that my HP D30 (non disco) I am getting ready to assemble is going to be just as good as a D44. Is it true that the weak point on either front end is still the axle shafts? With 30 spline inners and 30 outers (warn) and good Ujoints will my gears still hold at 4.88? How much clearance do I gain with the HP D30 over the D44?

they are the same except your 30 has a smaller ring gear than the 44. a rubi 44 is pretty much a 30 with 44 gears

the shaft diameter of the 44 is larger than the 30. the 30 shaft is 27 to 33 spline the 44 goes 30 to 35 spline. the 30 can go to a 4.88 gear but the 44 can go to 5.89.

The gears will be your weak link.
Depending on your driving style you could be fine up to a 37" tire(if your nice to it)
if you have not allready you should buy an axle truss TNT(Treks offroad) makes a nice one. helps keep everything lined up (no flex) and the loads appied in correct places
    (less likely to go boom)

yeah, when i was first considering this somone told me about one of these for support and it seems to the way to go for sure. I plan on waiting for a 30 spline arb to come up for sale at a good price on this site or craigslist and making the swap then.

forgive me i'm naive. Is it possible to build a 30outer with 44 interior parts?

the HP 30 is pretty much just a regular 30 with reverse cut gears which is stronger in the front application, a non HP 30 would be stronger in reverse though.

The D30 and D44 only goes up to a 30 spline axle unless you are going to get some axles specially made.

That is a Rubi D44. Same knuckles, stubs, UBs etc as a D30. Just get the bigger R&P of a D44.

HP D30 will run on the drive side of the gears, not the coast side like a LP D44. I still like the chances of a Rubi D44 surviving a little longer than a HP D30 though, and gear ratios are more readily available in a D44. They USED to go to a 6.38, but I do not think anyone is making those anymore, 5.89s are now the highest available gear ratio. A lot of guys run their D30s hard, with up to 37" tires. Go above that, or stickies, and all bets are off. If you are going to swap, might as well go the D44 at the least, if you can swing it, go bigger. D60 or 9".
