96585 From: Parks Rinehart <parks@p...>
Date: Mon Jan 5, 2004 5:37pm
Subject: Changing engines

Anybody have experience swapping a fuel injected 350 Chevy engine into a
Jeep or another older Chevy? I have a running '92 Chevy 350 available to me
to use. It has all the wires with it as well as the computer. (and the rest
of the donor vehicle) My questions are about the electronics. The tranny
that is attached to the engine is an electronic 4speed. I'm not going to use
the tranny as it needs a rebuild and I already have a good Turbo 350.

My questions are what other wiring do I need and especially what do I need
to do to use the non-electronic tranny, as the computer won't be able to
command it?
I assume a CPS sensor will have to be mounted in the bellhousing of the
Turbo 350 somewhere or at the harmonic balancer?
a Check engine light and harness diagnostic plug will need to be added?
a MAP Sensor?
a high pressure fuel pump and lines as well as some gas tank mods?
an O2 sensor or 2 of them? The current vehicle has dual exhaust and no cat.s

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Parks

Parks,
Though I can't answer much, specifically, I'm 95% sure that they
engine swapped in, must be the same year, or newer than the vehicle that
it's going in to. It must pass all the emissions requirements for said
vehicle year.
It also must have all the emissions equipment on it that was required
for the year vehicle that it's going in to.

chill tim..the storm is clearing

there was no abusive action against the environment or wheelin industry taken on AA sat. my report was played-up for reading enjoyment. lots of gas was accidentally spilled out an almost vertical rig with a faulty gas cap...and was ignited to try and burn it off so that the last rig could attempt to get out before dark after a long day. i was not sure if lighting it was a good idea or not but i went along with it hoping i would get out without torching myself along the way.

I swapped a fuel injected (TBI) 454 into my Jeep with a TH400 transmission. I suggest you contact Howell Engines or Painless Wiring for a wiring harness. For about $300, I got an after market wiring harness that worked great.

Don't know about the CPS...don't think my BB has one.
The check engine light/diagnostics is included.
MAP sensor should already be on the manifold...harness connects to this.
Howell has the pump necessary. I have TBI so pressure is only about 15#. MPI is higher.
I installed an aftermarket tank and had them include a return line. You would probably need the same.
You will need an O2 sensor in the exhaust.

With the Howell harness, it was simple as ABC. It should be the same, especially if the 350 is fully dressed with all the emissions components.

Shoot me a note if you have more questions.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Parks

thats the problem with this internet crap tim. you don't know me but what i
write and vice-versa. for all you know...i'm some 16 yr old punk on dope that
likes to raise hell. ummmmmmm.....maybe i was at 16

anyway..........i will be 50 this month and have been wheelin for 40 of them.
not this extreme **** i have been doing lately but casual 4 wheelin in death
valley as a kid and in all the westen states with my dad. i desert raced
motorcycles for a few years also. i am married with a son through college. i am a
registered land surveyor in az, nev and ca.

i wouldn't intentionally do anything to put our wheelin rights in jeopardy
but at the same token, i will not "pussy foot" out there on our public lands
and be "heads-up" on what i may print in a trip report for fear of big brother
construing it as disaster. one thing i can't handle is some bozos trying to
tell me when/where and how to enjoy my public rights. i am allowed to wheel on
these "blm approved" runs just like the next guy. accidents will happen on any
given day out there. we all know it....so why try and "hide" the truth from the
feds. they weren't born yesterday. most of this small talk here on the bbs is
just that. i have never called a guy out on the carpet for something he did
or said he did. figure it's none of my business. when they come hunting me down
for no good reason other than to exercise their imaginary "good will to all
men" attitude......sets me up for a good argument.

it boils down to this:

i like to wheel
i have the right to wheel on the approved trails
i don't go to any bureaucratic goldbrick meetings trying to "save" our trails
i don't like being told by those few that think they are above me and want to
preach
i won't put a guy down for "fighting" big brother and the greenies....his
right
i won't preach to anybody that they are doing wrong.......his right

fair enough????????

Joe, sorry to bother you, I know that you are very busy lately! For
some reason, every time I try to post a reply or change forums, it
keeps telling me to sign in. But I AM signed in and my ame even
appears on the bottom as "SIGNED IN". The only trouble free way for
me to use the BBS is to go to my e-mail and go through the original
sign up link! I greatly appreciate any input, thank you!

P.S. The BBS looks great!

Hi Frank,

I suspect that one or the other formats will likely die of natural causes... either the BBS will catch hold and yahoo-groups will die down or the BBS will die down and yahoo groups will continue on.
To be honest with you, I don't think that the group will become divided but rather, it will evolve into something slightly different than it has been.

Glad you like the BBS... lots of people are working very hard to make it a success. Hope to see you around the azvjc BBS.

Kind Regards,

Joe

nice website Joe. We recently changed another group I am in over to
BBS format and people are getting much more use out of it. There are
so many more advantages. I would suggest IMO that the focus would be
to have either one OR the other though or you will end up with a
divided group. There are always people that will go draggin and
screaming into any type of change regardless of advantages. Its
understandable because people get comfortable with a routine and its
hard to change sometimes. Anyways...I would like to see the whole VJC
site over to BBS. It will eliminate alot of the reasons I and others
have been slightly removed from the group. The off topic stuff and
general BS can be in its own thread and people can read it or ignore
it. just my .02
