Mike has already spoken up and said that this is a good interim
solution... he will likely benefit from the mysql database that I will
be creating.

How are you going to supplement it? It looks like this will split the
group.
Will messages I send to yahoo group go to virtualjeepclub.com and/or
vise
versa?

You really should see where Mike is on his project. I know that it was
going
to incorportate a BBS and a yahoo style forum. Plus it would be at
azvjc.org.

You have a nay vote from me.

Subject: [az_vjc] A little feedback on moving forward with AZVJC BBS....
I'm
ready to pull the trigger...

Hi gang,

I'd like a little feedback here concerning running an AZVJC Bulletin
Board
in parallel with our current website. Please pay close attention to
what I
am saying. I don't believe that our website should be replaced. just
supplemented with a BBS style discussion board for those in the Arizona
Virtual Jeep Club who wish to participate in such a thing.

Here's where things stand.

Over the past few months, I have setup a Cox business account and two
servers. I now have php and mysql running on one of the servers which
will
be used to run the BBS. I have purchased a license of Vbulletin (the
same
BBS software used to run jeepsunlimited.com) and am now ready to install
the
software and get the site up and running. I have registered the domain
virtualjeepclub.com for the purposes of one day instituting a BBS for
the
club.

Here's what I need from the club..

I'd like some feedback regarding whether or not I should proceed with
the
install.

One final note. Mike Chatfield has done a TON of work on our current
webpage
and trip notification system. the BBS WILL NOT replace this system. but
rather, will supplement the system IF AND ONLY IF there seems to be a
desire
to implement a BBS. If not. I will be creating a Porsche club BBS and
will
use the Vbulletin license I purchased for that BBS.

Okay. let's have it. comments, concerns, good idea, bad idea.

Kind Regards,

Joe West

I have a full detroit locker that fits a D30 with 3.54 and
numerically lower gears. This would be ideal for someone that doesn't
want to change the gears but would like a locker.

Will consider a trade for a fullwidth, 8 lug, pass. side drop front
axle. Will also consider trades for 7 leaf pack waggy springs, D60
lockers or fabrication tools. A set of torches and bottles, pipe

Mesa Community College has an Automotive Technology program that is
probably less expensive than AAI and the collge credits will transfer
to a 4-year university. I don't know if courses from AAI will
transfer, but I would check into this before jumping in especially if
you are considering getting into automotive design/engineering work
later on. You might kick yourself for spending money on a program
that doesn't fit your needs.

Good luck,

Actually one of the reasons I joined the Air Force instead of the
Marines is because the Air Force had what I consider to be the coolest
looking uniform, ever. It was the 1549 dark blue, long sleeve shirt,
dark blue pants, dark blue cap, dark blue tie, dark blue web belt with
silver buckle, and of course, black corfam shoes. They phased out the
1549 shirt around 1985, and hey hey, that's just about the time that I
decided to get out of the Air Force. Maybe some of the other Air Force
old-timers who hang out on this list might remember the 1549 uniform
combo. It was SLICK.

Subject: The BBS is up and running...

Hi Gang,

Well... the install seemed to go well this morning, and we now have a BBS site:

http://www.virtualjeepclub.com

This is a BRAND NEW install and there WILL BE BUGS... I need your help to work through them... please help me out by signing up and letting me know if you run into difficulties...

Also...

I need moderators... if you wish to be a moderator of a forum, please let me know.

I need someone to do the graphics for our title page... Andrew? Anyone?

I need suggestions for different forum topics... for instance, do we create a TJ, YJ, CJ, XJ, Willys, ZJ, etc? forum or do we leave it all lumped together?

I need suggestions for new forum topics other than the ones I have created.

I have pretty much ENABLED all features... uploading of pictures, links, change your avatar... everything. Unless someone abuses the board, I'll leave all these features enabled.

PLEASE... send your suggestions so that this can be useful for everyone...

Contact me if you run into any difficulties.... this will be a learning process for all of us.

Kind Regards,

Joe

Agreed on the uniform, although I'm an old AF puke. But you brought it up,
so.... talk already.

Subject: Rocker panel measurements???

What is the measurement from the (top) edge of the door sill (where
the flat part of the rocker panel actually starts) to the bottom edge
of the rocker panel/body on a 97 TJ? My rockers are so chewed up, I
can't get a good measurement to find the right size angle iron to
build some rocker guards. It's so bad, they'll have to go all the way
up to the edge of the sill and be notched out to show the Jeep logo,
just to cover the damage on both sides.

Subject: RE: Re: A little feedback on moving forward with AZVJC BBS.... I'm r...

So as not to be accused of pointing a finger at someone, I'll simply
respond to a few things I have seen posted in the past 24 hours. Some
of them really had me laughing for a while (attempting to grasp the
logic that fueled their writing).

1. For sure....no one in the AZVJC has ever hijacked an e-mail message
thread and completely changed the purpose of what it was conveying,
while leaving the subject line the same as it originally was. And this
is somehow different than the same thing happening on a BBS?

2. Looking at a list of forum topics (ie., message threads) on the BBS
is different than looking at a list of subject lines in your inbox? I
still haven't figured that out yet....seems like either way you get a
list of things you selectively read or ignore.

3. Until Mike Chatfield banned attachments, I was forced to receive
pictures, via e-mail, for e-mail threads I had no interest in what so
ever. At least on a BBS forum, I can pick what I want to view and it is
not forced down my throat.

Here are some other ways to view the issues if a BBS format is used.....

1. My e-mail inbox will no longer be filled up with message threads I
don't wish to see. I have to sit and wait for all those unwanted
messages to download from the mail server just so I can get the few I am
interested in.

2. I no longer have to received all of those ridiculous "reply to all"
e-mails that everyone has to keep creating when the horse has already
been beaten to death and then has to be resurrected so it can be beaten
to death yet again....especially when the topic has been dead for a day
and then someone returns from business trip and feels compelled to add
in their two cents on an issue that was put to bed.

3. I no longer have to figure out what somewhat is talking about
because they when replied to a topic that was being discussed two days
ago, they also erased all of the previous text in the message body.

4. Good topics of interest can be brought back up for discussion,
complete with all the previous discussion, just be adding a response to
the old thread.

5. People asking a question can be easily directed to a previous
discussion with just a simple link to the appropriate thread ID.

Obviously, the same issue can be viewed as a pro or a con depending on
which side of the fence you are camped on.

Dave,

You are quite correct. I've obtained several flags from the annual
JeepsUnlimited runs we have a Moab each spring.

The first year's flag was to thin and was ripped apart by the wind.

Subsequent year's flags were more durable, but damn near tore your
antenna off when going down the highway.

I found that you pretty much have to attach the flag while on the trail
and take it down the rest of the time (which kind of negates the reason
for a flag.....I already know the folks I am on the trail with are
members of the group that I'm running the trail with!)

We had some made a few years ago for the Tucson Rough Riders. The first
batch looked great but wasn't very durable - they tattered in the wind
really quickly. The second (or was it the third? - I forget...) batch
was
stronger and more durable, but the banners were so heavy they either
pulled everyone's antennas over (if the antenna was spring-mounted) or
they flat broke the antenna. I was running a Firestik fiberglass antenna
on a solid mount (no spring at the base) and the banner was so heavy the
antenna eventually shattered at the base.

YMMV, of course.
