I've been wondering the same thing. I think it's almost impossible unless the person you bought it from knew the history. The only thing I know based on the serial number on the tub and the frame is that my jeep was built in April 1945. I'm assuming from the OD paint underneath the light blue paint that it was assigned to either the Army or Marine Corps stateside prior to being sold as surplus on the civilian market. From what I have read, very few if any at all ever made it back to the states after WWII. They stayed overseas and were distributed throughout the allied countries.

    Hi Mike,

Congratulations on the find and I hope you enjoy your restoration as much as I'm enjoying putting the Scrambler back on the road. I absolutely love Willys.

I plan on being there Sunday. One of the vendors on G.503 wants to look at my jeep to let me know what all is original on it. Plus, I'm sure he wants to sell me some stuff too.

I would suggest rather than sand blasting it, which embrittles the metal, have it media stripped with soda or plastic... A bit more expensive, but does not work-harden the base metal like sand blasting does. Not a big issue on the on heavier chassis parts, but on the sheetmetal, it can come back to haunt you...

Thumbs up Re: My New 45 Willys MB

Hey Mike/Dawg, Next time you are in 4 Wheelers ask Surf/K-Bow/Mike or Bryan to show you the original MB manual that is stashed in my old office. It's the one in the aluminum binder. It half written in English and half in Russian! It's from when we were suppling the Ruskies durring the war. It's a service manual and parts catalog. Really COOL! I think you will get a kick out of it. If they cant find it call me from 4 Wheelers and I'll direct them.

Re: My New 45 Willys MB

Now that I have made sure there were no markings of historical value on the jeep it was time to start disassembly and stripping the parts down to bare metal. I feel like a kid at times and can't for the weekend so I can play with my jeep.

I started with removing the hood. I used paint stripper to peel away the coats of paint and took a 120 flap wheel grinder to remove all the bondo. I have found that the last owner must of had stock in Bondo because there was lots of it.

Underneath all the bondo revealed mucho dents.

I noticed some the original OD paint underneath the paint on the underside of the hood so I slowly took the paint away that revealed the outline of where the Lubrication chart was. Also by removing the bondo it revealed the original holes where the lube chart encloser was attached.

    Before

    After (Note Lube Chart outline)

    Next I removed both fenders.

Note the cool flip up headlights that made it possible to to work on your jeep at night.

Note the original OD paint on the inside of the fender.

Then I removed the wires from the headlights and blackout lights and removed the front grill.

Kind of looks like an old T-Bucket.

Starting to look like a real project!

Next I'm going to work on the main tub and probably will have it off the frame next weekend.

Re: My New 45 Willys MB

Due to the Super Bowl I was only able to work on the jeep one day this weekend.

I spent the whole day today removing the tub BY MYSELF. Yep, it was tricky but I got it off with an engine hoist, a Hilift jack, some 6x6 blocks of wood, and a couple of car ramps. If I would've had some help I could have done it in an hour but nobody is home during the week and I wanted to get it done.

The trickiest part was getting the tub up and over the steering wheel shaft and getting it to slide through the hole in the tub.

My first attempt. I tried different angles until I could get the thing over the steering shaft.

Using some car ramps and a Hilift to keep the height and pull from another angle.

Finally got it up and over.

Finally off and on the ground

    Rolling chassis

The whole thing fits nicely in one corner of my garage.

Next I plan on removing the engine, tranny, and transfer case, front and rear axle, then send the tub and frame to the sandblaster. This has definitely turned in to a frame up restoration.
