How good is the Chevy 700R transmission in comparison to the Turbo 350 and the Turbo 400?

Many consider this the best conversion if it will fit in your vehicle and cause no drive line issues depending on lift and other things.

Opinions vary on strength for stock versions of each (all can be built up), but in general I think the TH400 is strongest of 3 with TH350 the Weakest. In general they are the best 3 to swap into a Jeep. TH350 is shorter than the rest.

JP Magazine had a review of them some time ago, check them out on line.

700R has an overdrive. The others do not but if you get the right tire and gear ratios you can be at the same RPM's and get better mileage with a TH350 or TH400 because you don't have the power loss (heat) due to the overdrive tech of the 700R.

I don't remember if all of them have a lock up converter available.

TH400 runs hotter so therefore more horse power loss all things being equal.

700R requires a computer, but I understand there are early versions that don't.

I don't remember which has the lower first gear, I know the 350 is lower than the 400.

Check out Novack they have good info on all of them.

I went with a TH350 in mine, decision based on length, simplicity, costs (initial and replace or repair), general fit, and operating temperature.

Call the guys at Desert Fab. They do business with the guys next door who do their tranmsission for their race vehicles and did mine. I have been very happy with mine.

Just to add one thing to the above post. The 700R4 has the lowest first gear of the three. It's nice because the lower first gear means you could get by with less steep R/P ratios.

    Ratios are as follows:
    TH350 - 2.52\1.52\1.00 reverse 1.93
    TH400 - 2.48\1.48\1.00 reverse 2.00
    700R4 - 3.06\1.62\1.00\.70 reverse 2.29

    2000 Wrangler Sport - 4.0/auto, RE 3.5", 33x12.5x15.

700R has a lock up converter. You can get a box for it that locks up the converter at whatever speed you dial it to. Don
