Sounds like a linkage problem did you get under and see if it is hooked up?

Actually I am really not sure, or what i would be looking for. Up until now i have had older CJs and that all just a lever engaging a gear.

When it shifts into 4 low, it goes into creeper mode but i know the front axle is not moving...

But is the front driveshaft moving?

From what I remember, unless it has been modified or the front axle swapped out... All YJ's have an axle disconnect on the passenger side axle shaft that is operated by vacuum in OEM form. If the vacuum lines are broken or missing or if the actuator is not working or has failed, unless it has a front locking differential, you will not have 4wd even with the transfer case engaged...

Since the vacuum lines run below the battery box, they are susceptable to damage from battery acid, along with old age as this vehicle is now 13 years old...

Check and see if the vacuum lines are hooked up and / or missing...

Here is a thread from another site that maybe helpful, oh the power of the internet...

    Good luck,

I second this. My vacuum lines were both eaten through by some battery acid. I just added a length of larger vacuum tubing that the stock would fit into.

I had the exact same problem with my YJ a few years back. I crawled under and found my vacuum line cracked in 2 places. I replaced it with a new one from the dealer. But if you plan on keeping your Jeep for a while you should upgrade to a cable system and get rid of the vacuum setup.

Re: 95 Wrangler 4wd Wont engage?

I had a problem with my 4 wheel drive not engaging.. a couple of times. The first time some pack rats had eaten through the vacuum lines that run underneath the battery. If you have a vacuum gun you can disconnect the lines from the shift motor on the passenger side of the front axle to see if your lines are still holding vacuum and try and detect where the leak is coming from. The second time this happened to me I found my lines were holding vacuum but one of the breather lines was clogged also causing the collar in the axle to not be able to slide back forth.
If all your vacuum lines are all functioning properly it could be the shift motor that went bad. I picked a used one up from AMC Salvage for pretty cheap.
