So, I busted my 11 yr old looking at porn

I was doing my usual internet rounds last night before I went to work and found a new website in the drop down menu on the search bar. It looked very familiar from my younger days of porn surfing in my 20's on my 486DX. Sublime.com. I had to click on it to verify and sure enough, the majority of the site is T&A. I have busted him before checking out a bewbie website with one of his buddies. When that happened I gave him "the talk" a father has with his son when he transitions from a child to a young man although at 11, I thought it was a little premature. I basically told him NOT TO LOOK AT THAT STUFF ON MY COMPUTER (even though it's his computer because mine died so I comandeered his). I don't really have a problem with him looking at naked girls at his age. I know when I was that age, a couple of my buddies dads had boxes of Playboys and Hustlers we would check out. A couple guys even knew where their parents kept "The Devil and Miss Jones" hidden.

I really don't have a problem with him looking at naked girl media but, with what's available on the internet, I don't think it's very healthy for a kid to see a girl spit a football out of her vageegee either(as entertaining as I think it may be). I really don't want to put parental controls on the internet access at my house. I would much rather my son chooses not to go to the websites he knows not to look at here.

I think it's great that my son knows his way around ms windows and the internet at 11 but there are downsides also. He's a good kid and very intelligent. I'm confident the porn incidents are his buddies saying "go to this site" when they're over at our house. They're all the same age though. Parenting these days is much harder than it was when I was a kid. Thanks to Hannah Montana and Zowie 101, I have an 8 yr old daughter that thinks she's 15. I wish they would just stop growing at about 5 and stay there. I miss those innocent days.

Has anyone else had cyber incidents with their older kids? I can't be the only one. Can I?

I feel for you. My kids are 4 and 3 so I'm not in your shoes yet. I feel the same as you that if my son was the age of yours a few boobs here and there in no big deal. But as you said, the days of sneaking a few "tasteful" Playboy's and looking at airbrushed softcore pics is a lot different than the stuff you can easily and quickly find on the Internet today. Unfortunately I don't know what I'd do if (and ultimately when) I'm in your shoes but I'm curious to what others that may have kids of similar age have to say.

    On edit:
Back when we were that age the media that we were potentially subjected to (ie by sneaking into dad's end table) were what dad looked at. Hopefully as dad it wasn't of the football shooting variety. So you could only corrupt your kids as corrupt as you were. Hopefully his friends parents weren't super freaks because your kid could be subjected to that as well. Typically this "football variety" stuff wasn't widely distributed as you had to be a somewhat legitimate company to pay for distribution of such material... not to mention adult shops had to carry the material as well. With the Internet anyone can post any fetish they want on the internet... so not only is your kid open to the media that dad has and his friends dad's have but he's open to the garbage that every freak in the world may have.

FWIW I've seen some pretty freaky crap on the Internet... I'm no angel by any means... but I'd prefer if my son started out sneaking playboy's like the rest of us instead of being subjected to the freaky crazy crap off the bat. LOL. I don't want my son to think that golden showers is normal.... yes guys, golden showers is NOT normal.

My son is 11 also. If I saw him looking up porn on the net I would have a BIG PROBLEM with it! I would ground him for at least a month and would certainly use parental controls if I let him back on. I know that some parents are more leniant but I have heard of thing that they are doing now on those porn sites and its ... I HAVE NO WORDS FOR IT.. and you thinking a girl spitting a football out of her...is entertaining?? Dont you have a daughter?

What about these boys in your house with your son looking at that crap with your 8 year old daughter in the house?? Id be freaking out if I were you! Boys seeing those sort of things make minds race. and I wouldnt trust one of em around your daughter.. especially if they are hunting for it.

Not making a big deal out of it now.. will only let your son think that you will be ok with other things (that are a big deal) in the future.

I dont even let my son watch COPS.. He knows there are sick perverted idiots in the world because we talk about that sort of thing. but i dont need him seeing a bunch of drunk, stoned idiots on TV and people laughing at them like they are humorous. I want my son to see drunken, stoned idiots as what they are.. Drunken stoned LOSERS! not someone to laugh at and make fun of but to look at and feel sorry for. so he doesnt think acting that way in the future when drugs and alcohol are present will get him attention. I also dont let my son watch all these movies that are completely related to people getting high and drunk and its supposed to be comical?? How is someone who has devoted thier life to dropping out of school and getting high and drunk everyday comical? uhmmm OK?? Like that movie loathing in Las Vegas? That whole Movie is about two guys in Vegas getting high on acid.. THE WHOLE MOVIE! its ridiculous!

Getting a glimpse of the 5 oclock news everyday is enough of a wake up call for him.

Im lucky that he is into his runescape computer game and that the computer is in plain view of everyone in the household which makes it hard for him to be looking at anything inappropriate.

Just to clarify, a dude at work showed me the football thing to me on his phone. My 11 yr old hasn't seen it but it's on the internet somewhere. I hope he doesn't run across it and think it's normal to shove a football behind the meat curtains and think it's normal?????

I'm not really worried about the kid. I just wanted to share the experience of parenting in the digital age for those with younger kids that will grow up with computers and wireless internet in their room. Beware!

Re: So, I busted my 11 yr old looking at porn

Funny this has been posted as my sister's daughter recently was busted being curious.

Your son is 11...coming up on puberty very quickly (so is my niece). There is no coincidence here...both of these kids are coming up on some very major changes in their bodies that signal a new transition into sexual maturity. With these physical changes come psychological changes as well.

My suggestion to my sister was this...Talk is cheap when the internet easily opens up a whole different world to them. I told her to have "the talk", which you have had, but I added a twist...

I told her to have a three part talk...physical maturity, sexual reproduction, STD's. The kick is that with each talk you use the internet to show the other side of nudity and sex...the more "real" side...

Has your son seen pictures of developing fetus?
Has your son ever seen a woman give birth?
Has your son ever seen pictures of genital herpes?
    An AIDS patient?

This is not meant to scare, but rather to educate. I think it also takes the curiosity and really gets at the consequences of behavior they will contemplate in the next 5-6 years. Finally, I believe it says to her daughter or maybe your son, you can come to me and we can explore these questions together.

    Hope that helps.

I agree that kids are being subjected to more and more at younger ages. I recently became aware of what "drizzle" the Disney Channel puts out. I have since limited his viewing to even more than I usually do. He gets one disney show a day. The rest of the time it has to be outside play or one of the Discovery Channels. Seems to be improving his dimeanor(sp?).

I first started looking at my mom's cosmopolitans, then we moved on the our friends Playboys. Saw my first porn in 8th grade... Ugghhh. A gradual transition. I would be uncomfortable if my 10 year old boy saw what is on the internet. I definitely will not be letting my gbaby girl do anything/leave the house til she is 18...

I also agree with you John. I'm all for education and rather slam the door and say no educate on the consequences of what could happen. May scare them straight. I know when I was in high school (I'm 32 Saturday) seeing the movie Philadelphia which came out when I was in high school scared the crap out of me and I haven't had unprotected "relations" with anyone other than my wife since then.... and Sherri and I were dating a good solid year before I went there... and much of it was probably because of that movie. The other part of this was my mom never said "no", just followed an approach similar to what you just suggested, John.

The best way to deal with it is to let them look! It's hard to deal with, but it's completely normal!

It is time for you to educate your teens on what they are seeing, and to monitor where they go looking! If they know you can see where they been surfing they wont want to check out any extreme sites from home.

Blocking their computers, grounding them, and that kind of stuff will just cause them to look more discreetly, and then you wont know what your kids are doing! Sheltering your kids, so they dont know it exists will leave them unable to deal with it later, when they need to know!!

I wouldn't let the world know you are "letting" your kids look at porn on the internet Allen, that will get you a visit from CPS and possibly a one way ticket to tent city or the Springer show any way
