Are you thinking of doing a similar assist conversion Kyle? I must have missed this thread back when it was created last year but now that I've seen it I'm thinking of doing it. My box is leaking so I'm going to have to pull it out anyway...

It sure looks like that ram would hit or bind on something when you articulate.

Edit: Naw! I looked at it again in the pictures.

That's what I will do when I get my HP 44 built. Nice job!

What is this bushing? I have been trying to find it for a while. Any help? I went by the rest of your write up and just need these bushings to do the install.

By the way your write up helped out alot!

    Thanks for the info!

there is no law that says you cant have full hydro steering. its a myth. the problem with full hydro is its very hard to find the right displacement valve and even then at 70 its very very touchy. not streetable in my opinion.

It's just a bronze bushing that comes in different lengths. Ace sells them in the little bins with all the odds and ends items in the nut/bolt section. I don't have a pic. I think got the 1.25 or 1.5" long ones and just cut them down to the right length. I think it's 1" but they might have been out of that size at the time.

1.5" bore with a 1" rod diameter. 1.5" bore diameter works well with the stock box/pump as there's very little lag in the steering response.

Glad I saw this. Good write up. One of my next plans, was searching for the rams. Thanks.

So honestly, what's the reason behind the addition of the cooler? I mean, the ram only adds additional volume of total fluid, which would reduce temperature. Does the simple in/out action of the ram really generate more heat in the fluid than stock steering working oversize tires???

I recently added PSC steering box and hydro assist on my YJ, but did not install a cooler. Only one run on it, so aside from FLOVING the performance, it's still "new" and a cooler could be added pretty easily.

Hey Tom, bit easier to turn the tires now eh? Makes you wonder why you didn't do it sooner, LOL. I figured a cooler would just help keep the fluid happy and keep it from degrading and foaming. Figured it the cooler fluid will help the seals in box/ram last longer too. The fluid gets pretty hot after a good workout. Plus a bit more capacity couldn't hurt either.

Yeah, Matt. Except it's more like "nice to actualy be ABLE to turn now"! ;-)

My old steering box was shot...would not keep the tires pointed left!

Now that the new PSC box and ram is on there, it just doesn't matter anymore - 4lo, locked front, up/down, sticky rocks beneath. It just doesn't matter...one finger turning at all times! I bought all this junk almost a year ago, and it finally made it to the top of the "to-do" list.

I will be adding a cooler. Still have material left over from the hose kit, and have access to cooler for price of some beer (which I will drink half of anyway - heh heh)!

Tom, do you have a pic of how you mounted your ram to the D30?
