Truckhaven Hills, CA
I know that AzVJC members have plenty to do with keeping Arizona trails open, but I'm sure that some AzVJC members have used the Truckhaven Hills area in California, too.
The Truckhaven Hills area is in the California desert about 100 miles east of San Diego, about 60 miles southeast of Palm Springs. On a typical weekend, the area is used by thousands of Jeeps, quads, and motorcycles. For 44 years, the San Diego Tierra Del Sol (TDS) 4WD Club has hosted the TDS Desert Safari at Truckhaven. Last year, the TDS Desert Safari attracted an estimated 15,000 people to the area. For the past ten years the California Off-Road Vehicle Association (CORVA) has held a winter off road event in Truckhaven.

In September, 2006, the California State Park System acquired approximately 4,000 acres of the Truckhaven Hills area that had previously been privately owned. The purchase was funded by revenue from the OHV "green sticker" program. The rationale for acquiring the land was to prevent the land from being developed for home sites.
Last week, the Center for Biological Diversity filed suit to halt CORVA's Truckhaven Extreme Challenge Poker Run that was scheduled for January 20 and 21. The basis of the lawsuit is that the land is now state owned, and therefore, such an event could not be held without proper environmental review.

CORVA decided not to fight the injunction and canceled the event. While the injunction prevented CORVA from holding an organized event at Truckhaven, it did not enjoin individual off-roaders from legally using the area on an ad-hoc basis.

Although the injunction only applied to an event that required a state permit, and did not affect individual off-road users, I wonder how long before the Center for Biological Diversity tries to get an injunction to stop all off-road use in the area pending an environmental review?
