Which 4X4 system does this Jeep have?

I am thinking about buying a '93 Cherokee, but I can't seem to verify which
    4X4 system is in it.

According to the VIN it has part time 4X4.(called command-trac?)

However, the 4X4 shift lever has a full time position labled. (There is that orange and green writing on the bezel, vesus black and white.)

However, I can't seem to get it in that position. It seems like it just has 4X4 high and low.

However, the shift pattern has a step in it (I think part-time shifters are a straight line shift, right?).

    Can anybody enlighten me?

    Thanks!

If you have the full time postion you have the selec-trac version, which basically means you have the NP242 transfer case instead of the common NP231 case which, is a part time system.

As far as I know, all transfer cases have a joggle to shift into 4 low. The full time position allows you to use 4 wheel at all times at all speeds, although not recommended for dry road, but can be done.

As far as the shifting problem, you might either have a linkage problem or an internal problem in the case. I'm sure there's someone here that might be able to enlighten you more on the shifting problem.

    Thanks for the help.
With the VIN decode and the shifter bezel telling me different things I would like to figure this without a doubt. I suppose somebody could have put the full-time bezel in the console. I have a hard time beliving the VIN decode is incorrect.

Is there a way to identify which transfer case from under the vehicle without removing it?

    Thanks

The NP242 has an extra postions 2Hi - N - FT - 4Hi - 4Lo (I might have got the order wrong, but FT has its own position)

    The NP231 has 2Hi - N - 4Hi - 4Lo

You should be able to tell the difference by just pulling on the lever.

If it's really sloppy you will probably have to replace the linkage bushings.

There should be a tag on the transfer case that will tell you what it is. Both my 90 and 94 XJ's have this tag. Hope this helps.

Its got a "Full Time" option, then its a NP242 ...

As far as getting it in, your on you own

I belive the FT option transfers power front to rear, at least thats what I could tell when I had one apart...

Yep. on our 2WD 01 XJ we had, you could still see the spots in the guage cluster where the F/T & P/T indicator lights would have been.
