I was honked and waved at this evening. I was turning left onto Elliot from
Cooper and a yellow TJ honked and waved as it went by. Don't know if it was
a member here or not but thought I'd see if it was.

Subject: [TR] Turkey Creek - Sunday, February 11, 2001

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Jason LaLiberty is leading a Turkey Creek trail run on Sunday, February 11, 2001.

When: 10:00am
Where: I-71 and Carefree Highway. S.E. Corner
Rating: 3.5+
Length: 6-8 hours
CB Channel: 4

Meet about 10:00am and head up...flexible on time and location even. I haven't been there before, thought it would be a fun run!

The Turkey Creek Trail runs up the Black Canyon from Bumble Bee to Cleator. After turning left off the main road onto FR 684, the trail will split to go down into the canyon, and then meet back up at the bottom. Either way will get you down, neither are very tough.

Once down to the bottom, take a hard right up and drive up the sandy wash. Keep an eye out for a trail that leads off from the left. If you get to a wide area where the wash splits, you've gone too far. The trail runs between tight brush on each side, there is a gate that you'll have to go through not to far along. As with all gates, if it's open when you find it leave it open; if it's closed then make sure you close it after you pass through.

The trail at this point winds its way up the wash, in many places the trail has all but disappeared. There will be rocky areas to play on along the way. If the river is running, you'll want to make sure you have a winch along, as there are boulders and quick sand hiding, waiting to bite a Jeep.

Keep following the wash up, eventually the road will become more apparent. The trail takes a steep climb out to the top of a ridge, then drops off the other side. You will come to a Y intersection, you may go either way. The left branch climbs another ridge and then drops you back into the wash on the other side.

The right branch takes you through an old hermit's mining claim. The trail on the right branch almost completly disappears; pick your way through carefully you'll find rocky flat areas with no brush on them, this is the trail. After passing around the corner from the Hermit's cabin, you'll see where the trail used to go across a bend in the wash; now that is pretty much impassable. You can continue up the wash and around the corner. If the water is running, this may be extremely hazardous.

After the bend, the two trails combine again. The trail is much more visible now, there will be a few places where the trail splits, take the most travelled looking trail. Go SLOW one of these side trails (the old trail) has about a four foot angled drop off as you come around a blind curve.

The further you go, the more apparent the trail is. At the joining of Poland Creek and Turkey Creek, the trail leaves the bottom of the canyon and heads across the hills to Cleator. Overall, with a small group of Jeeps, this trail can be done between 4 - 6 hours when dry depending on how much site seeing you do. If it is really wet, this can be a weekend trip. One note of caution, this trail runs almost entirely through active mining claims; do NOT stop and start digging around.

Remember to bring water, lunch (and more if it's wet), and don't forget your camera.

Enjoy and remember to TREAD Lightly!

About 1/2 mile before "the ledge" in the bottom of the wash, take
a left. Follow that road. it is a nice drive, some cool old
machinery to look at and the road is much better.

Normally Crown King is a piece of cake in a stock Jeep. There is
one ledge that has been worse than usual the past 6 months.
Somebody finally removed the ramp of rocks here and alot of
vehicles turn back. The last couple times up I had to winch a
couple vehicles over it. There usually is ice on the portion of
the trail. One TJ has rolled of the cliff next to this obstacle
recently, though I don't think it was an AZVJC member. One of the
vehicles I winched, a Dodge Ram had his rear tires hanging off
the dropoff. Another one, a YJ had both drivers side tires
hanging off. We managed to get both back onto the trail with the
use of a snatch block and winch. Be extremely careful on this
obstacle this time of year! Be sure to travel with others.

Nice pics. Interesting run. Had around 15 vehicles....really too many for
this trail. It was probably an hour and a half into the run before the last
jeep was able to hit the trail.

The only breakage was a blown d/s joint, which was quickly repaired. We did
have one rollover, but fortunately, no one was hurt...although, one of the
passengers was not
strapped in, and was thrown half way out of the vehicle. Fortunately, he did
not get rolled on. Getting him to medical help would have been a long
process. Seat belts are your friend!

Also...soap box time...we had a couple of folks who did not exactly follow
the principles of Treading Lightly. One was kind of unaviodable...the other
was by choice. When ever and where ever possible...please respect the
environment out there. Thanks!

Anyway...the second half of the trail has had 3 to 4 feet of sand dumped
into it from
the recent rains.....so many of the obstacles are now buried...making it a
bit easier :o(

The first half is a class 4, and the second half was a strong 4.5. Now it's
more of a 4....but there's still the 15' BFW...which requires a winch. There
were some valiant attempts to do it w/o a winch. Jess Hamilton got the
closest in his FS chopped Cherokee...he got a gold star for effort...but no
banana.

Happy Trails,

Doug

Keep your eyes on the posts and we will try to get the

last minute by members. Some of us are also active members
in the Tucson Rough Riders and do most of our runs with them.
I'll try to put together some more runs together

you looking for? What kind of Jeep do you drive?
Just wondering as we saw a newly lifted YJ yesterday!

Click on "Truck Tech 4U" (towards the top middle of the page)

Scroll down on the new page and click on "Rancho 9000 Shocks XJ

Click on "Dual Action Remote Control System" (Top left)

Follow the links for the install.

I really hate web sites that don't allow you to just copy and paste

Subject: Question regarding Coves and semi-stock TJ

When I moved out here from Philly 8 months ago, I'd never been offroad in my
TJ. So once I saw all the awesome places to go, I lifted my TJ and put 33's
on. Of course, I wrecked it a few months ago, and am now the proud owner of
a stock TJ (except for 31" tires). Almost all of my offroad experience is
from running the coves in the old TJ. What I'm wondering is... will I be
able to do the coves in my new TJ? Even with the 3" lift and swaybar QD's I
felt a little nervous on some of those hills... so with no QD's, no lift,
and smaller tires I'm even more nervous. Also... the tires on the jeep were
purchased used, with probably 35-45% of the tread left. They are a little
cracked and dry in between the treads... should I be worried that I am much
more susceptible to a flat tire from the rocks out there? Hope none of these
are stupid questions.

a bunch of kids and dogs.

First of all, thanks for putting up with the trip delay. A little dental
surgery forced me to reschedule this trail ride.

Most of the participants met at the Texaco on US60 near Florence
Junction. I accidently put out two different meeting times so our start
to the trailhead was slightly delayed. It worked out since the folks
from Tucson were a bit late. Several of the 4x4 were towed to the
trailhead. The dirt road to the trailhead had a few good washouts that
were deep enough capture 33" tires, but the trailers survived the trip.

After airing down and introductions we headed for the trailhead. The
first vehicle fix occured before we got to the rocks. Jess blew a
u-joint on his highly modified Jeep Wagoneer. Since he was near the back
and was familiar with the trail, the rest of the group was not delayed.
I asked that the drivers take a look at the start of the trail to help
them decide the route they wanted to take. The MR trail starts out with
an alternate 2-stage waterfall that takes a lot of guts to descend. We
all opted for the bypass. I started down the trail with Steve spotting
me most of the way. It took a bit of time to get all the vehicles on the
trail. Minor/major hangups, a few small repairs, a couple of drivers
trying alternate routes kept the group on the downhill section of the
trail until 2:00pm. Not bad for a group this size! Everybody was in good
spirits.

One vehicle bugged out at the escape route after deciding that they
wanted off the trail before dark. They took off to find a fording point
across the Gila River. Hope they didn't get lost!

We regrouped and headed toward the waterfall. I had hiked the trail a
few week earlier and knew that we wouldn't have too many problems. The
monsoons had moved enough sand to bury the rock garden between the
squeezes and the waterfall. It was a super highway. Most of the vehicles
went through the Virgin's Regret, an obstacle with a tight entrance and
exit routes that, last year, were almost impossible to traverse. On this
trail ride, with the sand level up about 3 feet, they were not a
problem. Two vehicles opted for Charmin' Rock and going over the small
rock barrier. There was a row of boulders that had to be crossed to get
to the waterfall.

we made it to the waterfall around 2:30pm. I promised that the group
would be off the trail no later than 5:00pm so we had 2-1/2 hours to get
everyone up the waterfall. In the trip description I had made the
comment that I thought someone would be able to make it up the waterfall
without a winch. Of course, many of us had to try it and see if they
would be the first. It made for some good shows! The waterfall was
flowing pretty good. The sand at the bottom of the fall was very wet and
each vehicle added wet sand to the face of the waterfall. The kids
assisted by rerouting the water so that it was flowing right in the tire
tracks. Needless to say, no one made it without winch assistance! This
is the obstacle the gives the trail its rating.

The hill climb after the waterfall was a little more packed since the
last time I was on the trail, but even still one Jeep got sucked into a
washout next the trail and had to be winched back on. Another vehicle,
the last one up the hill, somehow slid to the right side and did a slow
roll back to the canyon floor. No one was hurt, but they were a little
shook up. Having a hill between the trip leader and the accident made
for some worrisome moments, especially since most of the 4x4s had
already left. There was enough help at the tail end that everything
turned out okay. The rag top was the only thing damaged. The last 4x4
was off the trail around 6:30pm.

Charlie Bab****, Scott Nixon, Steve Graham and I set up camp and enjoyed
a nice cool evening under the stars. We left Sunday morning after eating
breakfast.

I hope everyone had a good time. Thanks for coming out.

I will be posting pictures soon.

1) When I turn the key to turn it off the engine kinda spits and sputters
for a few seconds until it finally turns off...why? is that bad?

2) Are the stock springs normally flat (no arch) when sitting on flat

back sits higher than the front.

2.5) Should I keep those spring packs, they seem to ride pretty good.

3) How much lift do you have to have to fit 33s? 35s? w/o trimming?

4) Anybody want to buy some dinky little stock size full tread tires and
