Bump steer is caused by having too large of an angle between the drag
link and tie rod. In this case, changes in the distance between the
axle and the chassis (like when you hit a bump) result in lateral forces
being applied to the drag link. Either the steering wheel spins to
one side or the wheels turn to one side during this event.

A drop pitman arm may help eliminate bump steer. But you need to make
sure you have the clearance to run one. For example, on my YJ, the
zerk fitting at the end of my pitman arm rubs my tie rod under extreme
articulation.

Other things like stronger tie rods and tie rod ends make your rig
stronger. They don't address bump steer. Neither do those "S"-shaped
drag links - those only provide clearance around parts (like leaf
springs in a spring-over configuration). I suppose replacing some of
these other parts might improve your sloppiness if you replace parts
that use to flex or had loose tolerances with stronger parts that have
tighter tolerances. Beefing up some of the bracketry might help also.
TJ owners will have to comment on these areas.

It is very hard to "run" from Lake Pleasant to Crown King, as it is well over 30 miles and uphill most of the way.

However, your YJ is capable of getting through the trail. My first time on that trail was with less than what you have.

TJ asked me a question about backspacing and it caused me to look up some of my earlier links. I don't think I passed this one on so here it is. This is the most technical explanation of offset and backspace that I have seen. Good reference material.

http://www.usacomp.com/Offset.htm

The bottom line - The TJ Gambler rims have a backspace of 5.5". I don't know what the offset is. Most Jeeps seem to run between 3.5" and 4.5" - that range gives you decent clearance without causing unusual bearing stress. It would be interesting to see what others here have for backspacing so I set up a poll at yahoogroups. There should be an email out on it shortly.

Yup...Roger's right on. You can also experience bump steer if your
front axle was not centered. A lift will shift your front axle to the
left. An adjustable track bar will solve that problem.

ACB'ers:
Here are some details below on a couple trail cleanups this weekend. Let's
try and make a good showing. I've done a couple recent ones, and the BLM
and Forest Service really appreciate the fact that there are responsible
four wheelers out there. They get so much evidence of the bad ones, they
are refreshed by seeing some cleaning up for a change. We really need them
on our side to continue to keep our 4x4 trails open. I was out at Lower
Sycamore a while back and it was a disaster with tons of litter and
cross-country trails cut everywhere. Come on out and do some good. Kids
love this stuff, too! Great way for them to earn those merit badges!

Normally Crown King is a piece of cake in a stock Jeep. There is one ledge that has been worse than usual the past 6 months. Somebody finally removed the ramp of rocks here and alot of vehicles turn back. The last couple times up I had to winch a couple vehicles over it. There usually is ice on the portion of the trail. One TJ has rolled of the cliff next to this obstacle recently, though I don't think it was an AZVJC member. One of the vehicles I winched, a Dodge Ram had his rear tires hanging off the dropoff. Another one, a YJ had both drivers side tires hanging off. We managed to get both back onto the trail with the use of a snatch block and winch. Be extremely careful on this obstacle this time of year! Be sure to travel with others.

Heh, I know its not necesarily the same trail, but I ran the I-17 to Crown King trail in an '81 Camaro Berlinetta! I was told by a friend that it was 'just a dirt road'. I found out exactly what it was about 17 miles into the trail. Needless to say, I was a little miffed but I made it up (camped) and made it back with only a few body touch downs but no actual damage to the Camaro.

That was about the time I started telling myself I need a 4x4..

Maybe this is a stupid question.. Where is this ledge? I've run this
trail a half-dozen times or so in the last two years, and I can't
think of anywhere that sounds this difficult? I've run all the
optional trail/bypasses, etc. too. Probably the hardest part is the
short, steep hill climb immediately uphill from the two
wrecked/burned cars in the wash. It seems to have been eroded away
to where the first 15-20 feet feels like it's straight up.

Anyway. No big deal, I am just curious. :)
