I lost a rear u-joint on the trail. When it broke it took out the yoke and damaged the drive shaft. I replaced the driveshaft with one that had the same manufacturer number, replaced the yoke and u-joints.
I now have an acceleration vibration. Precision Drive Line checked the shaft and it is perfect. I tried a second yoke and still have the same problem.
I have a TJ with 6" lift and no SYE still. I didn't have the problem before I broke the u-joint. Any idea why the difference between the old and new?

Did you check the pinion bearing and shaft to make sure it was not tweaked?

By looked okay but I have no way of checking it other than by sight.

How about the tail shaft, you said that you DONT have a SYE.
Is it possible that when the Drive line went, it also bent the tail-shaft on the T-case  they are long and weak...

DITTO! I have to agree with Geno that you may have bent the tail shaft. If you take the driveline off and leave the xfercase in gear and the tranny in gear and run it at a slow speed and observe the tail shaft for wobble. (Make sure you understand what I'm saying or put it on a lift). :)

Thats what I would do. (Antmans Test)

That STOCK Tail shaft is so darn long, you would be able to see the slightest little tweak.

And trust me, they are VERY WEAK.

If its bent then I would say its a perfect time for a SYE.
If a SYE is to much money at this time, then get ahold of the local 4X4 shops, they have them lying around. ;)

I will give it the test tomorrow. Thanks for the help and will let you know.

Bent tail shaft was the second thing that came to mind.......

The first thing was trying to figure out how someone is running a 6" lift on a TJ without a SYE and getting any kind of reasonable u-joint life..

How about skill. :)
I haven't had any problem with it until the broken u-joint and then I had a pretty good idea I was pushing it too far to get up a large rock just prior to hearing it break. I have had it on 4.0+ trails before.

If that was a response to my question, you'll have to forgive me. I don't see where skill and the u-joint angles of a short drive shaft have anything to do with each other. I'd appreciate your filling in the gap for me. Thanks!

I had a 4" lift on my TJ. After a while, I had the Harley effect at about 63MPH. Finally got the SYE and CV drive shaft put in. No more vibes!! :D

Stu, I really didn't have an answer for you so I was joking.
I really have not had any problems until I recently broke the u-joint. I have taken it on 4.0+ trails a number of times with no problems at all. I didn't have any vibration until I replaced the parts. I tend to agree about the tail shaft although I have not had a chance to drop the drive shaft to check it. The drive train was all original. Had a heck of an angle but not problems until now.

I understand. I hope you get the issue resolved without too much hassle. :)

Just checking on labor cost to replace tail shaft. Does $200 labor sound normal for that type of replacement?

I don't know what part of town your on, but I also have a tailshaft that you're welcome to. I also have the old housing and driveline that's yours if you want it. I am up at 67th ave. and happy valley road.

RBear,

Before spending $200 on replacing the same shaft, I would spend the $425 at AZ Drivelines for a SYE and a brand new CV shaft. I just did mine, and it is great! I can't believe that I waited this long to do it.

Thanks to all of you.
I got the tail shaft from Simon and had it installed. They had to cut part of the skid plate bolts off because they were rusted and two of the welded nuts got striped. They welded on the new nuts, replaced the tail shaft and the vibration is gone.
If any more problems in the future I will take Clayton's advice and install the the SYE myself on the next go around. Just couldn't swing it this time.
