I finally got the chance to take a look at the new Jeep Commander model. Darner has one with all the bells and whistles, including a hemi. It kind of looks like an H3, but with a 3rd row of seating. I think DCX has a winner with this one. Now if they would sell it with a diesel ...

I'm having trouble getting past the fact that it looks like the Chinese knockoff of the Cherokee, only bigger.

Pretty expensive with the Hemi wasn't it ?

What were they asking for it ?

Way too much, but I don't that the Commander will ever be a "utility" vehicle. It's a luxo-cruiser. I think they wanted $38k for it, but the markup took it over $40k. The new Grand Cherokees cost less.

With the Liberty, Grand Cherokee, and Commander now on the market, I am surprised that DCX-Jeep is still making a budget convertible.

I thought the Chinese knockoff of the XJ was pretty cool at first. Then I saw this http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,22749-1783784,00.html
The first Chinese car to be exported scored a ZERO on safety ratings. The worst rating given in 20 years. Even though the airbag deployed the steering collumn comes up and takes the drivers head off!

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread but the whole thing just rang a bell for me.

I find the Commander to be one of the ugliest vehicles on the road today. Just what we need...another gas guzzling luxo SUV. I guess DC has once again listened to the needs of the upper crust.

The more that time goes by; the farther we get from the original Jeep. The rough and noisey ride along with rugged looks is what makes a Jeep. Next we'll be dealing with IFS and 4 door Wranglers to satisfy all the people whining about ride quality and lack of creature comforts. It's a freakin Jeep people! I liken this trend by comparing the space age look of the Honda Goldwing to the mechanical look of a Harley. Give me noise, vibration and a rough ride just to let me know I'm alive! ;)

I don't know Eric, afterall it could be fun to take a Sawzall to it just to fit 33s. :D - kidding of course, shame of it is that the H3 of all vehicles comes with 33s and the new Jeep comes with the ground clearance of a Camry.

A-men to that! I do feel a plasma cutter would be much more effective though. :D

Yeah, but no where near as noisy and if we are going to cut up a Commander at least we should make some noise doing it. :D

I saw some of these at Avondale. Spendy, but it is meant to be their new flagship.

Has anyone bent down to look underneath?... I saw lots of skid plates, nice and flat

9+ inches of clearance under the pumpkin ,same as my rubicon but without the excavation equipment

I have driven it and the H3 and , while the H3 looks tuff, the I-5 is just fluff.

Ill take the 4.7 v8 any day. If the commander has the 5.7 and a 3
"lift,hey,fuggeddaboutit

I think it will be a winner

Big. Boxy. Ridiculously heavy. I have to agree with Eric and CactusCatcher--let's keep a Jeep a Jeep, and slap a Chrysler logo on the Commander. Quit trying to make the brand into a one-size-fits-all.

I am appalled at just how much weight you can pull out of a stock Wrangler these days! When I disassembled them for conversion, I would have a pile of carpet and plastic molding the size of a Jeep! And the Jeep would sit 1" higher.

And I am with you on the sawzall. If a group of church kids can take bats to a Jeep to make a "statement", I think we should sawzall a Commander to make a statement about utilitarianism and gas consumption! Who's with me?! :D J/K!

Somewhere I read this, and it still makes me laugh:
"How do you say Hummer 2 in Japanese? Armada!" :D
Unfortuneately, Commander falls into the same category.

I sell commanders...

They have the mercedes-benz ML suspension upfront.
-ESP is from mercedes-benz too
-I think the tranny is too...if I remember right.
-They are a bit low to the ground, but damn, quadra drive II (standard w/hemi) is AMAZING OFFROAD!!!!!!
- Quadra trac II is available w/4.7L. This one uses brakes for traction control. Trust me, it works...no comments.........

They're only about ~$1000 more expensive then a Grand Cherokekee but it's amazing how many features are standard!

Hit me up with any questions!

And yea, I'd also cut those damn fenders off and stuff 33s...that'd be sick:D :D :D

I'm in the market for a luxo gas guzzeling barge with all wheel drive.
The hemi combined with quadra track II sounds like the powertrain I'm looking for... a solid axle would be nice, but ifs will be fine given the rig will never be used for any real off roading.
I appriciate the purists in thier want for "real Jeeps" but, I'm not looking for a "real Jeep" to off road in, I have one, my Cherokee, I'm looking for something that can get out of it's own way, cruise snow/pavement conditions mindlessly, and haul a crap load of camping gear and 2 dogs.
I want a nice ride, and minimal wind noise, and the commander seems to have it all.

Would I prefer a solid axle rubber floors and crank up windows... no, not for my intended purposes...
I do like the attributes of my '89 Grand Wagoneer and '97 Cherokee, but, I'm ready for something that can keep up with traffic in the mountians, ride nice, quite cabin and mindless/seemless all wheel drive.

Trouble is, it's the ugliest thing to hit the road since Lada.

Makes the Ford Exploder look elegant by contrast...

yeah, but what's up with the one in the commercial with the frozen dude in the back seat? it says "Commander 4x2 as shown: $42000"!?!?! There's a lot of vehicles out there for that kind of money. Tahoes, Expeds, Sequoias... Not knocking the Jeep, but it seems expensive, no?
