I have a 94zj that suddenly doesnt want to start. It will start intermitently and when it does start it stays running with no problem. no sputter and no stalling.
i checked and it seems to be getting spark, but i figured if it were a fuel thing such as the pump that it would cut out or have a hard time running once it was started.
i changed out the fuel pump relay and that didnt help. any ideas?

Did the check engine light come on?

See if the ECM threw a code.

If the Computer did'nt throw a code, I would say look into the fuel system.

Has it died while running?

So far it has not died while running. Thats what is puzzling me. after it starts it runs fine, it doesnt stutter or anything.

OK,

Lets see, does it seem to be harder to start when it sits for a longer period of time.?

yes actually it does, basicly first thing in the morning its hard to get it to start.. and then right after work.
but sometimes it starts right up anyway.

It sounds to me that the Fuel Pressure Regulator is allowing all the fuel to bleed back to the tank, thats not un-common with the 4.0.

Is this something that is easy to fix? How would I go about it?

On your Jeep, the Fuel Pressure Regulator should be at the front of the fuel rail, and should be held in by a fork do-hikke with a screw in it.

The Regulator in pricey, they are over a 100 bones

Next time you shut your jeep off and have a few minutes to kill,
just sit in it, you may hear the gas gurgling back into the tank, if the reg is leaking alot.

It may be worth it to remove the Fuel Reg. off the rail and replace the o-ring.
Its cheaper than a reg.

Let me see if I could dig up a pic.

Good deal,
Thank you very much, I will try to see if this fixes the problem.
I will most likely start with the O-ring and go from there.

If the fuel system idea doesn't work out, check your battery cables. I cleaned mine a bunch of times on my 4.0, and they looked clean. However corrosion got down past the clamps into the wire and they were shot. Sometimes it would start right up, other times nuttin. It would always run once started (off of the alternator of course). This happened 3 or 4 times over the course of 6 months. No problems now that I have a new battery harness.

Oh, and it never threw a single code.

How's the charging system holding out? Is it a V8 or an I6? When was the car actually made? 1993 and early 1994 ZJ models had some electrical anomalies that can be very difficult to track down. The early models also have limited computer diagnostics.

Do you ever get dieseling or sputtering BEFORE it gets to the state where it won't start? I've exerienced this with my '94 (in fact it's starting to do it again this weekend after a long time of behaving). It may take up to an hour before it finally decides to start and then it starts up and runs as if nothing ever happened. Friday night after being at the Az State Fair for a few hours, I tried starting it up and it just cranked as if it wasn't getting fuel. Kept trying until I decided it was time to call for a tow. Just as the tow truck got there (about an hour later) it fires right up. Ran normal all the way home.
I'm wondering if gas mixture (that time of year when anti-smog treatments are added)) has something to do with it. Anyway, my problem somewhat similar to yours.
