Ok guys, I had a Tonsillectomy Oct.-11 and I'm board out my mind
and the computer is gonna keep me out of the shop.

The tools that are needed for a STOUT set of XJ Rock Rails are;

1) Chop Saw or something to cut the steel with,

2) Welder, doesnt need to be anything fancy. I built my first set with a Craftsman 110 mig and flux-core wire.

3) Drill

4) a grinder would be nice but its not needed.

Lets get started,
I used some 3x3x 3/16" sqaure stock for the slider piece.
Whatever size you use, just make sure its at least 3/16" thick
All the steel I used was in the scrap pile out in the weather, but it cleans up just fine
I placed them on jack stands and worked my way inward

The two pieces of angle iron I cut mount to the Uni-Body, they will need to be pre-drilled for self-tappers. The little piece will be a tab for bolting to the leaf spring mount.

For the two pieces of steel that attach the Angle iron to the square slider, I used 2x2x 3/16", just cut to your desired size.

This is the trick to STOUT,
A) min. 3/16" thick material
B) The tab at the rear, it attaches to the leaf spring mount with a nut & bolt.

C) this is important, use a piece of 1x1x 3/16" square stock to run the length of the XJ pinch seam, you will need to bolt it through the pinch-seam lip in 3 to 5 locations. When landing on the slider, this peice of 1x1 will distribute the load along the entire pinch-seam, this is where most of the strength will be and also why self-tappers are the min. needed at the frame.

If you would have capped the ends, you would have slid right over, and not had to use a jack. You can see where the end of the scrap is what held you up on the rock.

Trust me, That would not have happened. capped or not.

You have NO idea whats on the other side, do ya

You cant see the rock that the D-44 is hung up on, can ya ?
Axle tube and diff ;)

The mark you pointed out was from attempting to back up and standing the boulder on end, wedging it between the fender and the tire

By the way, Cliff didnt want to take the time capping them, but your more than welcome to do it to yours

Oh and, The pic was to show how stout they are, and that a highlift could be used on them

Why do you need rock rails on a Grocery Getter? Even my tow rig can go over the speed bumps at Fry's without rock rails. Am I missing something?:D :D

Hey Geno, the 1x1x3/16 is on the inside or outside of the pinch seam?

Hey Geno, the 1x1x3/16 is on the inside or outside of the pinch seam?

Its on the outside, under the rocker panel.
I'll try to round up a pic for you.
