As some of you know Steve and I have been working on installing an
on-board air compressor in my ZJ for the past week. The project is
coming together nicely, but a lot more work needs to be done. We hope to
have it done by the end of the week. The OBA might be functional for the
upcoming Miner's Revenge trail ride -- I hope!

Anyway, I started a webpage which describes what it has taken to get the
compressor in. The page is not complete, but I will update it as the
project progresses. Right now the battery relocation and compressor
bracket fabrication and installation are the only topics covered. The
webpage does not cover all the options that Steve and I considered and
threw out.

Subject: [TR] Trip Report - Table Mesa Area - Sunday, January 28, 2001

Hello All,

This is an automated message from the website, please do not reply to it!

Greg Stapley lead a trail run Sunday, January 28, 2001 across Table Mesa Area

This run was anything but mild. We ran six jeeps, mine stayed on the side of the road. Nothing excites me like seeing a line of jeeps come down the trail..

It started out pretty calm until Dan decided he wanted some body damage and high centered his jeep on one of the first obstacles. A little tug from Dan C was all he needed. The rest pased uneventfully. Next obstacle John walked over, and left the rest of the jeeps with some pretty big shoes to fill. Dan C Climbs up the obstacle and no matter where he puts his wheels his transfer case was in the way. After several tries he decides to take the line just right of the first line. He climbs up and poses in an awsome wheelie stand. Of course pictures were taken and he presses on... Transfer case again. Rather than admitting defeat he gets a tug from John. Tara bypasses and next comes the red Wrangler. Impressive effort, but the clearence was not there. He too was hung up on rocker panels and the transfer case. A little tug from Dan and he was over. Next comes the Cherokee, the only long wheelbase on the trail. Making it just as far as the others his rocker gaurds get a work out. He spins all four tires till he decides a pull is his only way up. Onward

At the fork we decide to do upper as well. So we aimed to the right and soon saw what was to be the hardest part of the trail. We scouted the best lines and everyone decided which way was for him. John was the first and made it look easy. Next comes Dan C and he chooses a different line. SOmehow as we spotted we did not get him lined up perfectly and his rear driver side slid into the hole. ( sand and full of water. Rather than trying again he presses on. About a foot further into it dans Front right tire is 5 1/2 feet off the ground and Dans driver side is about six inches from the rocks..An amazing display of agility by his wrangler and again more pictures were taken. We decided to winch him straight rather than backing up. It works like a charm and dan Straightens out and crawls the rest of the obstacle, no sweat. Tara Decides to leave her jeep here and come back to get it later. Next comes the other Dan and his son. Dan decides to take Johns route. It started to rain at this point and the rocks become slick and uncooperative. After Several unsuccesful tries to straddle the crack he decides to move slightly left and go around the crack. Next is the red wrangler, he takes Dan C's line and soon finds himself in the same hole. After several tries the off camber position of his jeep was to great and the jeep topples over on the rear passenger quarter panel.. We moved the cherokee up next to him and ran the winch able over to his front bumper and made sure he did not completely roll over as he backs up and prepares to take the bypass..

Now the cherokee has it the worst because the rocks are so slippery at this point that Rous my mountain dog runs to Tara and begs to be held, probably just to get out of the rain though. In any case the cherokee just can't seem to get it's front right tire up on the rock and keep it there, several times he was up and in the cnext few feet would slide right back into the hole. It got rather frustrating.. To make maters worse his rear diff kept kissing the rocks. He admitted defeat and slid by it just to the right, not without a valiant effort though. That really was the last of the action as we all climbed up the waterfall. Just our luck it stopped raining as we ended the run. We talked abit at the top and watched Dan's son splash in the puddles. I hitched a ride eback to my jeep and bid the others farewell. Time for the superbowl.

Final damage report.

Some quarter panels front and rear on most vehicles. Almost all rocker guards or panels got thier fair share of dings. and The cherokee bent his tie rod. Diffs and transfer cases get some new scars but no real damage..

Final status:

A great run. We all decide to do it again soon.. Thanks for al those who ran it with me and a special thanks to John for letting me ride with him. Hopefull John will have pics up soon..

Being a newer member here, reading the trip report and viewing the
trail rating from the Table Mesa run (a 2+), I am confused.
We seemed to have less troubles, and sounds like less body damage, on
Upper Terminator and it was rated at a 4+. Actually the only damage I
know of was my stock (TJ) steps and a broken slip pin (from a shock,
somebodyelse).
Can somebody please tell me what the logic is here.

Ok heres the deal...no pun intended. My gf Tara has run Raw Deal
with very very little rockcrawling experience in a 4CYL TJ with 33s,
3" lift (TC lowered) and open diffs (4.11s)...in the rain, she
cleared everything on Lower Raw Deal, which is even easier when dry.

Raw Deal is good trail to test your rock-crawling skills, specially
for newbies, cause there are lots of bypasses and ways to go around
some of the hard stuff. I would recommend at least 31s but it's
probably possible totally stock.

Lower Raw Deal is eaiser than Upper, even though there is only 2 hard
sections on Upper...they ain't easy.

The body damage was from us (myself included)trying to find the
harder lines, which we did. Some of us (usually just me) don't care
much about body damage, drivetrain is the only thing important.

So most of Raw Deal can be made harder than with there being more
than one line.

And yes, we ran Upper and Lower Raw Deal today. I've never run
Terminator, but it should be at least as difficult.

That must be why DC is putting IFS in the new Liberty (yuk). Live axles do much to well off road. Too much flex....not hitting the oil pan and tranny enough - so IFS is the answer...

Why didn't we think of that? When is someone going to come out w/ an IFS conversion for the TJ??? :o)

nearly on the side, and thanks to Jon for the winch up.

Hope to run with you guys again soon, if anyone gets some video made,

I'm running a 3/4 setup on the back on my CJ7.. It was pretty easy to do and
it gives me about 1-4 inches more droop in the back. I cut up my original
spring pack to do it. The only disadvantage I see is it makes the back end a

H2H is still up in the air, but I will let you know when we go. I'd love to
have you along for the ride. I know how it is when you've got a jeep down to
make improvements. Besides I'd like to hear first hand how your project is
going. Have you seen the CJ2A frame that Jim Allen is rebuilding? If not
check it out on my All Off Road site at, www.azrocks.alloffraod.com
Its a more traditional approach than your project, but it is turning out
sweet.

I'm equipped with tire chains, winch, snatch block, etc. Don't worry about getting stuck, we'll get you out in a hurry :) Lets takeoff around 10:00 from Carefree Hwy and 99th Ave. If nobody responds I'm stuck at home I guess :(

Subject: TJ front axle???

Which type of front end do I need for my TJ? Standard or Reverse. I was
looking at a few different years of Broncos/F150 and the 67-76 has a std
front Dana 44 and the 77-83 has a rev front Dana 44, the 83-96 also has a
rev Dana 44 front. Just wondering which I should be looking for. All the
YJ's I've found have reverse cut front ends but do the TJ's also? Do when I
swap my front axle do I need the reverse or standard?

I plan on swapping out both axles on my Jeep so when I get this together
I'll have a D30 with 4.10's and No-Slip and a D44 with 4.10's and No-Slip
for sale. Don't know how soon this will be though. :)

Thanks in advance.

Pete

Subject: Thanks to all who responded to the little tires question.

I think it is great proof of hat a good group of people that are
here. Unfortunatly he went out & bought 1 new tire like was already
on there. But I really appreciate all the great offers & just wanted
to say thanks.
