I just signed up for Welding 101 at MCC. I've been trying to get in for awhile but everytime I've tried it was full. They just opened spring enrollment last week so there was openeings. The class is Jan 17th through may 12th (tue and thursday from 7:10 to 9:50. After my enrollment there are only 2 seats remaining in the class I signed up for so I'd just like to let others know if they're interested. There is also 2 other classes, another class at the same time/dates as mine in a different building and a Saturday class. I don't know how many seats are available in those. I do know their website schedule isn't as updated as they say because the class I signed up for shows 14 available seats still.
Here's the schedule if anyone's interested:
WLD101-6960 Tue/Thurs 7:10 through 9:50 Sunkees, Robert
WLD101-6962 Same time instructor is Sexton, Edward
WLD101-6964 Saturday class 8am - 1:30pm 1/21 through 5/12, Edward Sexton
If anyone tries to gets into the 6960 class let me know and I'll see you there!

Oh yeah, here's the cost:
3 credit hours X $60 = $180
Registration fee = $5
Welding course fees $200
The fees cost more than the actual class, but I'm assuming we go through a bunch of material. I also assume you need basic gear such as gloves, helmet, etc. I'm supposed to call down to the department to verify this.
Grand total $385

Great! I can't wait for the class to start. Are you building stuff? Or just burning metal? What did you have to bring to the class? Hood, gloves, etc? Did I mention I can't wait?

I am stuck with the senior project in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology program at ASU Poly until May 2006. It's not a fun project, but it has a chance of winning at WesTec in the Spring.
After that I might sign up for the a welding course at MCC next fall, but right now taking a couple years off from school after graduation sounds like a nice vacation. :)

Nope, not building stuff, just a lot of practicing on steel coupons... lap joints, t-joints, butt joints in flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions. We are still doing Oxy-Ace welding, but we are getting ready to move on to Brazing and then Arc Welding (Stick)
I have signed up for another welding class in the Spring, Welding 206 on Saturdays which is Advanced Heliarc and Wire Feed (MIG and TIG).
There is a list of stuff that you will need to purchase for the class, but I would hold off until the first day. They have a relationship with a local welding supply that offers a good discount.
But here are the things that you will need...
Welding Jacket or Bib
Oxy-Ace tip cleaner set
Striker
Clear Safety goggles
#5 lens gas welding goggles or face hood (I have the face hood, I like it because it allows peripheral vision
Arc welding helmet
Heavy Leather Welding Gloves
There are a few other things that are optional such as:
Comeaux Cap (if you like your hair)
Chipping Hammer
Pliers (for holding the metal when you quench it)
So far I can only speak about the Oxy-Ace process. It is frustrating at first because it is one of the tougher processes to learn and getting the feel, and the timing of adding the filler takes some practice, but once you get the feel, it gets easier from there.

By the way, the instructors are really good about giving overrides for classes that are full. I needed an override in the fall and the Professor that I spoke with said that they usually give lots of them out every semester, so if the class is full, go down to the school, meet the professors and have them give you an override.

Cool, thanks for the info. We were given a phone number of a gal that would fill us in on what we needed for the class. Called the number and the voicemail box was full so that didn't inspire confidence.
