This may be a stupid question, but how can I tell what axles that I have in my '97 sport? There is nothing on the rear diff that says it is a Dana 44. There is a 3" metal tag on it, but it doesn't say anything useful to me either. How do I find out what gear ratio that I have?

Thanks,

Thanks,

This is a FAQ. Google knows the answer. The tag tells all plus there are numbers stamped on the axle. You can also tell the general style of axle by the shape of the differential housing.

enter

"identify jeep axles"

Piles of details.

So can someone tell me why? On my 2002 TJ Sport, it has a 44 in it, but where the model number is supposed to be cast in the webbing it reads (SHF 6) .

rear axles: a dana 44 has a metal plug ( also the housing has more the shape of the ring gear), a dana 35 has a rubber plug.

Front axle is a dana 30.

gear ratio on the tag: lets say you took the tag off, read it...lets just say you have 3.73s...this is where you would see it on the axle tag (most of the time):

XXX XXXXXX XXXXXX
3.73 XXX XXXXXXXX
