What would be the recommended maximum height I can raise my XJ with out any real noticeable drive shaft vibration? I truely am on a budget on this project and although in time I will probably get a SYE, right now I have to keep it a daily driver. Also I have heard that people use the coil spring spacers with 4.5" lifts with no problem is this true?

Forgive me I am new to the Jeep world. I learn fast though ;)
Thanks for any help you GURU's can give me.
Mike

It depends on year. Later model XJ's are notorious for having slight driveline vibes at stock height so any lift makes it worse. You could probably get away with a 2" budget boost lift. Basically it's coil spacers for the front and blocks for the rear, with longer sway bar links (or drop brackets) and u-bolts. No other mods required other than an alignment. Anything over this and you'll likely run into vibes (without an SYE/CV driveshaft combo) and a host of other issues that need to be addressed like brake lines, shocks, etc.

How do you plan on using your XJ?

I've got the RE 4.5 lift w/1.75" spacers up front (for leveling)....I had just the slightest vibration....it was almost a non-issue, but I put in a tranny drop kit and it went a way totally......hope it helps......

I have a '97 with 231TC, ax-15 5spd, and 8.25 rear axle.
I lifted 1.5" and had serious driveline vibes... SYE and cv d/s fix'd them.
I've seen '97+ XJ's with 241tc, auto, and D35 with 3" lift and no issues.

"I think" the powertrain combo has as big an influence on driveline vibes as does the year...

if you have a 6cyl Auto and a chrysler 8.25, you can get an SYE and put a stock front shaft in the rear. I got an HD SYE from PORC for 169 bucks including shipping and bought another front CV shaft from another club member for real cheap.

Ok now the stupid question...
Is there an EZ way to tell if I have an 8.25 chrysler rear axle with LS or a Dana 35, By looking at it it looks like a 8.25 but I was told they didnt put those in until 1991. This is an all original 1989 cherokee 2 door Pioneer with the 4.0 Lt. engine with a 5 speed.

on the same note how can I tell what TC I have if I do order the SYE with my kit? Hey thanks for all the information gang I truly appreciate it.

Anyone from the West Valley (Surprise, Az.) wanna help install the Kit with me :D

All Jeep New Process transfer cases have a tag on the back. What kit are you considering?

Call me in the morning and let me quote you a Rubicon Express kit with a Advance Adapters SYE kit. I think you will be happy with the pricing:) And the results.

with an 89 you either have a 44 or a 35, but most likely the 35 darn.

It has the shape of the 8.25 though it does have a DANA logo on the cover with these numbers directly under the Dana logo 42968 then under that is has 173 8 dont know if that helps

Sounds like a 35 to me, the 44 would have a steel fill plug, and the 35 a rubber one. You wouldn't have a stock 8.25", but somebody before you may have swapped one in, take a picture and we'll be able to tell you for sure.

Don't know if that is a 35, did the XJ's come with a rubber plug too? That looks like a metal plug to me.

It does look like a 35 in its shape though. Do you have a pic of it directly facing it and not from up and under?

It IS a dana 35 with a metel plug. We have sold those covers for years. We have them on the shelf for sale.:)
