Okay I keep looking at my rear axle. Its on a 2004 Sahara edition TJ. I think its a 44 but I don't have that warm fuzzy feeling about it. Where its supposed to be stamped on the lower right it has AMSA. I looked at the 2005s at the dealership the 35s had more of a oval gasket than mine does. Can anyone explain how to tell for sure?

The 44 has a steel fill plug and the 35 has a rubber plug. I suspect a Sahara model has a 44.

If it has a plastic/rubber fill plug then it's a 35.

Thanks guys, its a steel plug. I now have that warm fuzzy feeling. I can concentrate on beefing up the front.

Good call though on checking with us. Some of the Sahara models have been coming out with 35's. I'm not sure if it has stopped but I was under the impression that they all were 44's until I saw some posts a few years back that their Sahara came with a 35.

Good to hear that! Good thing you don't have one of those trail rated Dana 35's!:D

By the way are you the guy who bought those tube bumpers from me earlier this year?

Desertdawg that was my buddy. We picked them up in my truck. I ended up making my own front bumper, turned out pretty good. I tried to talk him into going on the last Coke Oven trip. Maybe the next one.

The only problem is that you really dont want that dana 44. I have a stronger dana 35 i will swap you free of charge that I dont need. The nice pints of the 35 is when you break an axle it comes right out for you. great feature. The other nice features are its light weight and high ground clearance. But i am willing to make a sacrifice and part with my dana 35. :D :p

Thanks a lot! It's a 3.5" RE Superflex that I bought second hand from Barry (Xfallen) after he upgraded to his RK Long arm. I'm very happy with it so far. Having the cam bolts in the front helped considerably I'm sure because I was able to adjust my caster somewhat without having to buy adjustable upper arms (which I'll eventually do anyway). This made a large difference in the straight line stability once I adjusted it. It was somewhat twitchy before I made this change...but then again, I went from a stock vehicle to a lifted one so perhaps I just needed to get used to it.

I just put on JKS Quicker Disconnects Saturday night as well. The RE quick disconnects that came with the kit were a joke. I can't get the pins out to seperate the halfs even with them not installed in the Jeep. The JKS disconnects are so easy it's amazing... and for some reason, call me crazy, but it seems like I have even better stability with them on.

Chances are that it is most likely a Dana 44, since it's a 2004 Sahara TJ and he probably didn't put an after market steel plug in it.

I'm sure he will be able to tell for sure with the links Xfallen provided.

Thanks for your input!:D

If you really want to know if it is a D35 or D44, just take it out on a trail, find a nice hilll and go up. If your axle shaft breaks, it's a D35, if it doesn't, you have a D44.

Special K I did the Crown King, Coke Ovens and several Mountain passes in Colorado. Its still in one piece so a 44 hopefully. I had visited the google sites before posting the question here. Its not stamped anywhere, but the gasket shape would indicate a 44. I just didn't have the warm fuzzy feeling until the post about a steel plug. Then NVRSTUKXJ spoiled it. Then TC got it back. Now Mingoglia has a 35. AARGhhh:confused:

Actually its all good its still a J E E P :D

OK Look at your differential cover... Does the cover, the outside circumference, look like an oval or does it have "bends" in it? if the cover is oval it is a dana 35, if it has the flat edges oround the outside of the cover it is a dana 44...

Open the pics, one is a dana 35 and one is a dana 44, now its your turn to looka and decide what you have. :D

My reply was somewhat in jest as I broke my D35 this weekend. I think a D35 could last many years with hard wheeling, it was just a fluke that mine snapped at this particular time. I have gone on much harder obstacles with no problems. I hope you have a D44 though, it would sure make me feel a lot more warm and fuzzy.

That's what the sales guy said to me when I bought my jeep. Didn't know how to tell the difference by looking at it back then. I do now.
My 2001 Sahara came with a D35 :( . Only the Canyon Package Sahara's come with a 44 stock.

Good picks of rear diffs. That will help a lot of peeps.
