Headed out at 9:30 PM to the local TCBY to get some ice cream. On the way back I shifted into second and my clutch lever went to the floor and flopped around like a fish. When I noticed the light was turning red I decided to get it in neutral and hop the curb and get onto the shoulder (NW corner of Lindsay and Ray). This was a true emergency as I didn't want to sacrifice the ice cream. ;-) And of course I didn't have a flashlight (despite planning on getting a new flashlight due to Stu's write-up). Since I live only a couple miles away and if I got my wife down there in time (to save the icecream) with the tow bar I decided to make a quick call. At that time I reached down to try to see if I could feel my way to a fix....Bingo!, the cable just slipped off what appears to be a bolt of some sort.... anyway, slipped it on, called the wife to cancel the emergency rescue then shifted without the clutch on the way home just in case.... will figure out what the deal is tomorrow, I assume I'll just have to put a nut on there...or a cotter pin, or? I dunno how it attaches, but I'll figure that out later.... all that matters is the icecream is safe! ;)

What kind of ice cream was it?

It was chocolate/vanilla swirl with chocoloate sprinkles. It was the softserve frozen yogurt so it isn't quite as bad as icecream (at least that's what the propaganda says)
Hey does anyone know of an easy way to hook back up that linkage? I took a look this morning and almost kinked my neck trying to take a look. Is there something simple like removing the left speaker that will save my neck?

I'm assuming this is a TJ. I had the same thing happen to me up on Mt Lemon a few years back. About half way up the clutch pedal there is a little teat (for lack of a better word). A plastic clip snaps over the teat and the linkage for the clutch master cylinder goes over the clip. I used a bread bag clip to hold mine on until I could get my hands on a jesus clip. I can't remember what size it took or I'd tell you. I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post. Mine broke mid gears going up hill. I just sat there stupid trying to figure out what the fork I was going to do! Also, don't bother trying to find another plastic clip. They're over a hundred bucks...but they do come with a free clutch master cylinder. ;)

Thanks for the reply, that's what that thing's for. ;-) I actually found a broken plastic clip on my floor. I just looked quickly this morning and it didn't look like I could get my head far enough down there to see. I'll take another look if I can get home from work early enough to still have daylight.
BTW, the way you described it was funny as hell!.... and yeah, it's a '98 TJ
