Want to get some disconnects for my 93 YJ w/~4" lift. What's
best/cheapest? Two pins removable bar vs. one pin splitting bar vs.
one pin removing the bottom bolt (if that is an option).
I like the removable bolt idea but haven't seen much info on it. I
thought it would be neet to have just the bottom bolt removable and
tack another bolt on the frame to fasten the disconneted end up out
of the way. Instead of using bungees.
Thoughts/ideas. Or where to go to get some disconnects cheeply.

Subject: Currie Axles
Hi all,
I have had some recent dealings with Currie Enterprises and wanted to
share the experience with you. Around September of last year I called
Currie and looked into getting a high pinion ford 9" front axle to put
on my 86-(trick-cj)-7. After much research and many phone calls, I
determined that the high pinion just wouldn't fit due to the chevy
vortec and 4L60-E combo that I have. I ordered a standard ford 9" with
4.56:1 gears and a detroit locker, gusseted axle tubes and added skid
plating on the housing. One month later it was on its way to me. I get a
call from Yellow Freight trucking informing me that the package is on
their dock ready for me to pick up. Pick up? I asked Currie to send it
to my brothers house in Tucson. I requested that it be delivered and
Yellow stated that they only deliver to their docks and they would have
to hire another shipping company to take it to the residence for an
additional $40.00....$40.00?!?!? I just paid $2300.00 for a new axle and
now another $40.00 to get it to me? I called Currie and informed them of
the problem of me trying to fit their new axle in the back seat of my
jeep. Currie called me back in about 15 minutes later telling me that it
would be delivered to the house at no expense to me.
I installed my shinny new Currie built axle into the Jeep and all that
was left was having a new front drive shaft made for it. Two weeks ago I
finally took the jeep out to test the new addition to the family. Drove
about 1/4 of a mile in 4xhigh, and at the trail head shifted into
4xlow.....snap! Something broke. Went home, tore apart and found that
the hub was fine, the axle was perfect...could it be the indestructible
detroit locker? Yeppers. The right side output of the detroit failed.
I call up Currie and told them the problem. Craig tells me to send it
back the 3rd member to him and he would take care of it. They opened it
up yesterday and yes the detroit is toast. He told me that the only time
he had witnessed damage like this was from the result of driving on a
broken axle. I am still a little hesitant to believe that if you drive
on one side of the detroit, it will cause it to fail. This is saying
that if you do break a hub or an axle, you should not drive on the good
side. I thought that detroits were capable of that. Anyhoo, it is still
a mystery why the locker failed. Craig had a meeting with John Currie
and John said to "take care of him". Taking care of me is resulting in
Currie installing a new locker, shipping it back to me with a new
gasket, gear oil, reimbursing me for the $100.00 shipping charge to send
them the 3rd member. That is customer service. I estimate that "taking
care of him" is costing Currie at least $700.00. At no time did they
ever give me any kind of run around. All I heard from Currie was "I will
take care of it".
I salute Currie for their awesome customer service, I have never dealt
with a finer company.

Keith,
I know that these are custom, not Unimog axles. I've seen many variations on the web. I'm only saying that the original portal axle design by Mercedes is ALMOST 50 YEARS OLD! But I agree that we may see more of this design on future rock buggies. There are other issues though. The design can lead to tremendous torque stress on the control arms unless they are seriously overbuilt. On a leaf sprung buggy axle wrap could be a substantial issue to solve due to the increased leverage put on the springs due to the offset portal design.
It will be interesting to see what happens.

These are portal axles. Nothing new here - they've been around on Mercedes-Benz Unimog's since the 1950's. The Unimog is a very propular military, fire, rescue, and farm vehicle overseas.
I've been looking at these as an option for the TJ. I'm still in the research phase. Don't know if I'll ever do it, but it sure is a cool way of putting 4-6" of extra clearance under the axle housing. Not to mention that a long arm kit probably wouldn't be necessary since the geometry of the arms with 0-2" coils would be fairly stock and yet still allow clearance for 35" + tires. A flat skid would be a piece of cake too. Might not even need a CV shaft on the rear either. The portal end of the axles have a 2:1 gear ratio. Most of the Unimog axles have a 3.5:1 ring and pinion giving an overall axle ratio of 7:1 ! Very sweet.

Jim Florence has one on his YJ and they (the 8.8's) have been backing up
Mustangs and street/drag cars for years. I understand the axle is nearly a
bolt-in if you can get it from a mid-nineties Exploder...get disc brakes

My Two Cents...
Here is what I would / am going to do on my rig (Except mine will be a
little more permanent as I would like to be able to do this on the trail
too). I am going to put two little weld on mounts and a 1000LB Nylon strap
forward and rear of each axle. This is much like a limiting strap except it
will be easily removable after swapping a tire. You could also simply use a
ratchet strap, and ratchet your axle to you frame before you jack it up,
then you would only have to go up a matter of inches instead of feet to get
your meats off the ground.
Hope this helps...

There you go again.....trying to be safe!
LARGE blocks from Home Depot! They are cheap and able to handle the weight.
Funny story. A buddy of mine and I were trying to do an SOA on a Jeep and
tried using 2 hi-lift jacks to hold up the rear of the vehicle. I 'think' we
had too many cold ones before coming up with this idea. Both hi-lifts were on
the rear bumper from the rear. The whole Jeep started to swing to one side and
nearly took out my buddy. I think the conversation went:
Me: "No way in h&* I'm gettin' under that thing! You try it."
Buddy: "Whaa?? OK! But hold my beer while you steady those jacks."
Not a good combination. We wised up, sobered up, and got some big blocks and
heavy duty jackstands.

Hi Matt
If your objective is simply to get a wheel (or wheels) of the ground, try
using a chain to tie the axle and frame together......that way you aren't
fighting the suspension droop with the jack. I keep two 6 foot lengths of
chain in my toolbox for this 'cuz by the time I get a wheel of my J-10 off
the ground without the chains my highlift is within 2 clicks of the

Want to get some disconnects for my 93 YJ w/~4" lift. What's
best/cheapest? Two pins removable bar vs. one pin splitting bar vs.
one pin removing the bottom bolt (if that is an option).
I like the removable bolt idea but haven't seen much info on it. I
thought it would be neet to have just the bottom bolt removable and
tack another bolt on the frame to fasten the disconneted end up out
of the way. Instead of using bungees.

Very sweet.

Jim Florence has one on his YJ and they (the 8.8's) have been backing up

bolt-in if you can get it from a mid-nineties Exploder...get disc brakes

My Two Cents...
Here is what I would / am going to do on my rig (Except mine will be a
little more permanent as I would like to be able to do this on the trail
too). I am going to put two little weld on mounts and a 1000LB Nylon strap
forward and rear of each axle. This is much like a limiting strap except it
will be easily removable after swapping a tire. You could also simply use a
ratchet strap, and ratchet your axle to you frame before you jack it up,
then you would only have to go up a matter of inches instead of feet to get
your meats off the ground.
Hope this helps...

Subject: RE: how to jack up a tall jeep
Hi Matt
If your objective is simply to get a wheel (or wheels) of the ground, try
using a chain to tie the axle and frame together......that way you aren't
fighting the suspension droop with the jack. I keep two 6 foot lengths of
chain in my toolbox for this 'cuz by the time I get a wheel of my J-10 off
the ground without the chains my highlift is within 2 clicks of the
top......pretty scary!!
