I am leading a run on boxcanyon and the coke ovens again this sunday
(the 28th). For some reason, I put in the 29th when I created the
trip. I went back and corrected the date for the 28th but I don't think
the system is announcing it. If you'r interrested in this run, Please
sign up. If the weather will be NASTY, I will cancel the trip due to
possible flooding in the canyon, and I'm a whimp (no doors or sides on
the jeep) otherwise it's on!!

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to hold off on the oil pan gasket
because it looks like it may be a tougher job getting it off and back on
then I originally thought. I'll probably do the valve cover this weekend
and see if I can contain the leaking a little better. If it's still bad
I'm pulling the damn oil pan and doing that rear main seal later.
My oil leak is like Randy Moss. You can't stop it, you can only hope to
contain it.

I've had good luck just using permatex on the valve cover, just put a good

I went with the Dealers one piece rubber gaasket instead of the autoparts

Stu Olson wrote:
I have had multiple warrantee claims at Glendale Automotive (was Biddulph).
They have never once questioned that my vehicle was lifted, had after market
axles, diffs, etc. Most of the claims were resolved by fixing or tightening
something in the driveline/suspension system. (none of them were any items
that I replaced or did a mod on). For that, I am very thankful.
However, they almost never put the vehicle back together
properly/completely. I have found switches, screws, brackets, etc. laying
on the floor boards, stuck in the glove box, etc. Each time, I go back to
the service manager (I have learned now to completely inspect my vehicle
before leaving the lot) and discuss the problems. Given that this has
continued to occur over a multi-year period (I just went out of warrantee on
my TJ, so I hope I never have to go back), I can tell you that they don't
learn from the mistakes. Their 5 start dealership rating is a complete
joke, IMO.
My last visit ended in grease all over the driver's side floor area (that
does not include the part of the dash assembly that was not put back
together properly). The service manager and I had a long talk about that
one. He told me that it was just amazing that this problem could somehow
make it past 3 inspections, all done by different people. He did not seem
very receptive to the suggestions I gave him concerning the long term
employment opportunities for his employees. (Now I know why AZ has such a
low unemployment rate!)
In summary.....the dealership does not mind lifted vehicles (they sell them
off the front lot with 3" lifts)....and you shouldn't mind an incomplete job
when you're ready to drive it home. :)

These are portal axles. Nothing new here - they've been around on Mercedes-Benz Unimog's since the 1950's. The Unimog is a very propular military, fire, rescue, and farm vehicle overseas.
I've been looking at these as an option for the TJ. I'm still in the research phase. Don't know if I'll ever do it, but it sure is a cool way of putting 4-6" of extra clearance under the axle housing. Not to mention that a long arm kit probably wouldn't be necessary since the geometry of the arms with 0-2" coils would be fairly stock and yet still allow clearance for 35" + tires. A flat skid would be a piece of cake too. Might not even need a CV shaft on the rear either. The portal end of the axles have a 2:1 gear ratio. Most of the Unimog axles have a 3.5:1 ring and pinion giving an overall axle ratio of 7:1 ! Very sweet.

Keith,
I know that these are custom, not Unimog axles. I've seen many variations on the web. I'm only saying that the original portal axle design by Mercedes is ALMOST 50 YEARS OLD! But I agree that we may see more of this design on future rock buggies. There are other issues though. The design can lead to tremendous torque stress on the control arms unless they are seriously overbuilt. On a leaf sprung buggy axle wrap could be a substantial issue to solve due to the increased leverage put on the springs due to the offset portal design.
It will be interesting to see what happens.

In my "opinion", the D44 should suit you fine in the rear for your setup
(ie 6 cylinder and 35's). Friend of mine has run 35's on his CJ7 with a
6 cylinder and d44 rear for over 10 years and hadn't broken it yet. And
he has run ALL of the trails in the area (Woodpecker, Ajax, Hiway to
Hell, Axle Ally etc, etc, etc). If you ever have aspirations of larger
tires or bigger motors, you might want to consider the D60 rear
instead. But for what you mentioned here, the D44 should be fine.
For some reason I seem to remember some articles about D60 rears with
the 5 on 5.5" pattern. If this is true, it would be easy to match this
pattern up front. You know, another thought is that ANY D60 you get is
going to be too wide. If you intend to try to keep the width you have
now, your going to have custom axles anyway. Might as well get the D60
lug holes welded and redrilled to match your front. You've got to cut
the thing down anyway. And then make yourself a spare in the process.
This is a little more money, but you can pretty much bank on never
breaking it with 35's.

Of the three choices the 9" is probally the best bang for the buck. It
is next to indestructable and with the removable carrier design it is
easy to work on and regear.
As far a 5 lug versions of the Dana 60's. If these are the full
Floaters then it isn't the axle it is the break drum that needs to be
replaced and I haven't seen a 5 lug version of them. If it is the
semifloater there have been 5 lug versions made (mopar high performance

I am leading a run on boxcanyon and the coke ovens again this sunday
(the 28th). For some reason, I put in the 29th when I created the
trip. I went back and corrected the date for the 28th but I don't think
the system is announcing it. If you'r interrested in this run, Please

possible flooding in the canyon, and I'm a whimp (no doors or sides on

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to hold off on the oil pan gasket
because it looks like it may be a tougher job getting it off and back on
then I originally thought. I'll probably do the valve cover this weekend
and see if I can contain the leaking a little better. If it's still bad
I'm pulling the damn oil pan and doing that rear main seal later.
My oil leak is like Randy Moss. You can't stop it, you can only hope to
contain it.
