Subject: Tire Question
For the wonderbrains out there:
This is a "just wondering" question.....how do you determine what
size tire can fit on what size rim? Is there an established "rule"
or is it a whatever works use it type of thing?
For instance, can a 33x14x15 Bogger fit on a 15x8 rim, or will it
have to see at 10" rim?
Second, for rock-crawling, is it better to use an 8" rim (if
possible) rather than a 10" rim?
I'm sure this will open another debate, but I was just wondering?

The boggers have a 10" rim recommendation, however I use 15x8" and they work
great, and look awesome. 6psi and 0 problems

My experience, yes, the smaller the rim the tighter the tire. Of course if
you run a 2" rim your 14" wide bogger will look like a MTB tire. ;)

Generally speaking:
It depends on the manufacturer and what size rim the tires are
designed for.
For instance:
Interco recommends a 10" wide rim for their Super Swamper TSL
38x12.50 AND the 38.5 X 16 -- thats a full 3.5 inch difference of
tire on the same recommended rim, from the same manufacture on the
same type of tire. The difference is in the design of the tire.
You will find that Goodyear and BF Goodrich recommend a 8.5" to 11"
for thier 12.5" wide tires. BF Goodrich shows that they measure the
tire based on a 10" rim.
Using a rim on the narrow side of the recommended range will
generally help keep the bead from breaking loose off-road when aired
down and the tire helps protect the rim because the sides are bulged
out a litte more than with a wider rim. A wider rim will increase
the foot-print slightly but are more likely to loose a bead off-road.
Hope this helps,

Subject: re: oil leaks
A shop replaced the valve cover gasket on my 258, but I just finished an oil
pump change that involved a new pan gasket. I used permatex blue only to
hold the cork gasket in place on the pan while it was being reinstalled.
Just apply a VERY thin coat to the pan flange with your finger and lay the
cork on top of that. Dab some extra in the corners where the cork pieces
will mate with the 2 rubber pieces (there are actually 4 pcs to the "pan
gasket" for the 258, at least the one from Autozone). There are little,
conical chingaderas (the technical term!) on the rubber pieces that align
into holes on the crankcase, so I found it necessary to put these pieces up
first, then bolt up the pan with cork pieces attached.
As for tightening sequence, I worked both sides of the pan from the center
out. I didn't use a torque wrench, just kinda went by feel...but it doesn't
leak! Woo Hoo! Actually, I set my cordless drill/driver to a few ticks
above it's lightest torque setting, and then went back and gave about
another 1/2 turn by hand.
I haven't heard of the waiting period with the Permatex. I used it as the
exclusive seal when changing diff fluid, and bolted the covers on right
after application. I did have to go back and snug the bolts though, after a
couple days. You need to be a little more careful with your torque on the
soft Permatex, as it will just squeeze out if you tighten too much.
Hope this helps a little. If anyone else has other input or can offer
actual specs...that's cool.

Subject: oil leaks
In an attempt to control oil leaks on my 86 cj7 (with 258), I'm
planning on replacing the oil pan gasket and re-doing the valve cover
seal.
Two questions:
1. I hear the valve cover originally did not have a gasket, but you
can get one. Is it better to use just permatex ultra blue or the
ultra blue and the gasket? I also heard it's better to let the ultra
blue cure (10-12 hours) before putting the valve cover back on (when
used without the gasket). Any experience on this? I'm trying this
route first, if it doesn't work I'll look at aftermarket valve covers.
2. With the oil pan gasket is it recommended to use sealant with the
gasket? Also, any advice on torque and sequence?
OK, maybe more then 2 questions.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm looking at buying some tires and was thinking of 285/75R16s. Is that

If you have 285/75R16s, what's wrong with them? clearance problems?

I want collective opinions on axel upgrades. I have a 90

I'm going to use a Dana 44 front axel. Since the cost is
about the same should I use a Dana 44, a Ford 9", or a Dana
60 on the rear axel? The only problem with the Dana 60 is
that they are all 8 lug pattern. If I go with a 60 can I
get replacement axel shafts with a 5 lug pattern to match
the front?

Subject: ZJ and tires
Hi Linda, greetings from Sierra Vista,
Haven't talked with you in a long time. I finally started building up my ZJ.
Teraflex suspension, Super-Nerfs, and some 31x10.50's I had on hand. Pics in
members' gallery.
I'm looking at buying some tires and was thinking of 285/75R16s. Is that
what you have? (last time I saw you, you still had the "pizza cutters").
If you have 285/75R16s, what's wrong with them? clearance problems?
BFG makes the AT in 33x10.50R15s ...

The tire manufacturers have a reccomended range of wheel widths for
each size of their tires. As for what is best for rock crawling, I
won't touch that subject!

Subject: axel upgrade
Hi everybody,
I want collective opinions on axel upgrades. I have a 90
Wrangler 258 straight 6, 5 speed, Dana 30 front and 35
rear. I want to go with a spring over lift and 35" tires.
I'm going to use a Dana 44 front axel. Since the cost is
about the same should I use a Dana 44, a Ford 9", or a Dana
60 on the rear axel? The only problem with the Dana 60 is
that they are all 8 lug pattern. If I go with a 60 can I
get replacement axel shafts with a 5 lug pattern to match
the front?
Thank,
Chris R.

Pinzies have no suspension travel. The ones for sale in Chino Valley are
all gas models. There were a few at the Military show last weekend. I
think the owner of the one you saw at Intel belongs to a FE. I see it
